Kangkan Kumar Das, a doctoral researcher, and professor Debjyoti Bhattacharyya from the Department of Life Science and Bioinformatics at Assam University, Silchar, identified the species from Jatinga Hills in the Dima Hasao district of Assam. In 1845, British botanist J.W. Masters first discovered the plant from an unidentified location along Assam&#8217;s Sundar river and the plant was named after Masters. Speaking to Mongabay-India, Das said, “I was pursuing my doctoral research on the Acanthaceae family of plants and was travelling through Assam for my research. In Jatinga hills in Dima Hasao, I found this plant Rungia mastersii which is also a member of the family Acanthaceae. After I discovered this plant, I consulted with the renowned Chinese botanist Prof. Yunfei Deng from South China Botanical Garden who confirmed it.” He informed that for almost two centuries, there was no trace of this plant anywhere in the world. “Only one herbarium sheet has been kept at Central National Herbarium (CNH), Howrah,” he said. These numbers indicate a crisis that should be a national priority. Yet, every year, the response to the Assam floods follows a predictable pattern — brief outcry on social media, civil society-led relief efforts, hasty explanations on the causes of the flood, and promises of improved embankment repairs. There is little discussion about the systemic governance gaps that perpetuates this cycle of devastation. As per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the risk of damage from floods for a particular region can be seen as a function of three factors. First is the hazard or the potential for occurrence of a flood determined by climatic factors like rainfall intensity and physical factors such as drainage density. Second is exposure or the number of people and assets that lie directly in the path of the flood. Finally, there is vulnerability which represents how badly a region’s population is likely to be impacted when a flood does occur. This depends on socio-economic conditions that determine how easily people are harmed (sensitivity) and how well they can recover (adaptive capacity). In Assam, the primary flood management strategy has been to build embankments and other river control structures. The state has built around 423 embankments covering more than 4,800 kilometres. I finally found it at a weekly haat, a makeshift market where locals from nearby villages gather to sell their produce. “The availability of indigenous, local fruits has definitely decreased over time,” says Dharindra Nath Hazarika, head of the horticulture department at B.N. College of Agriculture under Assam Agriculture University. “There is a lack of research and documentation on this subject, so we don’t know the exact magnitude of the decline.” This loss is not restricted to just one region. In the neighbouring state of Meghalaya, for instance, local communities say they are observing that local fruits that once grew abundantly in people’s homesteads are now less commonly seen. Pius Ranee, executive director of North East Society for Agroecology Support (NESFAS), agrees. “Many traditional fruits, vegetables, and edible plants once commonly found in homesteads and villages are becoming less common. Older generations often recall a greater diversity of food plants around homes, fields and forests than what is seen today. 							<![CDATA[For years, forest officials in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve have reported occasional sightings of the greater hog badger (Arctonyx collaris) during routine night patrols. But beyond these observations, little was known about its population in the reserve, its habitat and behaviour. Now, the park’s first scientific assessment of the species published in June, has provided a glimpse into the hidden world of one of Asia’s least-studied mesocarnivores. Conducted by the Kaziranga Tiger Cell in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) and The Fishing Cat Project, the assessment estimated a minimum of 55 greater hog badgers across the 1,100 square kilometres of surveyed area and found that the species occupies nearly half the landscape. Researchers analysed thousands of camera trap images collected during the All India Tiger Estimation’s (AITE) 2026 exercise between February and May, providing the first scientific baseline for the species and suggesting it may be more widespread than previously believed. “The greater hog badger is an elusive nocturnal mammal. Spotting one in the wild could be a ‘call it a day’ moment for someone,” says C. Ramesh, the director of Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Waddling through paddy fields submerged in the rainwater of the past few weeks, they hummed songs and chatted as they planted Betguti (Oryza sativa), an indigenous variety of rice that holds the promise of withstanding the increasingly unpredictable weather — erratic rainfall and long dry spells. Once the planting is done, they will release freshwater crabs in the field. Alongside the rice, the crabs will grow too, sustaining each other and offering the women a way to sustain their families amid rising concerns of climatic change and land degradation . This women-led integrated rice-crab farming method is emerging as a climate-resilient alternative to traditional paddy cultivation in Assam. Climatic changes challenge traditional ways Traditionally, paddy-fish farming has been practiced in pockets of Assam, particularly areas that are vulnerable to floods. Around the same time, the people of the village Nepalikhuti climbed up on their rooftops and buildings as water was gushing in to their homes. Nepalikhuti, a village in Sivasagar district of Assam, along with some of the nearby villages were among the worst affected during the recent floods in the state. About 60-65 families in Nepalikhuti also took refuge in a two-storeyed building as their homes were swept away, shares social worker Shubhrajit Das, who visited Nepalikhuti for relief work. About 1.5 kilometres from Nepalikhuti, in the Santak Panchali locality, Sourav Choudhury talks about his experience of July 19. “The water entered our village at around 1 pm and within twenty minutes, it reached our chest. My family, along with 40 other families, had to take shelter in the two-storeyed building of the lower primary school in our village,” he told Mongabay-India. “In Nepalikhuti, the devastation is huge as around ten people died there. The death toll might increase as many bodies might be stuck in the mud. Also, around 5000 cows have been swept away. They were the main source of livelihood for the people there.” The death toll from the Assam floods has reached 100 as of August 10. However, this year, it was found beyond its typical home range. Aptly named the World Cup cicada, the insect, Chremistica ribhoi, has been recorded in Meghalaya in Northeast India. This year though it was spotted in the neighbouring state of Assam during a field assessment around the Rani Reserve Forest conducted by wildlife biologist Pulakeswar Basumatary, with Langtuk Terang, Assistant Professor, Pragjyotish College, Mann Kumar Thapa, a research scholar at Royal Global University, M.Sc. student Lakhinandan Dutta and butterfly researcher Rajat Joshi. Basumatary told Mongabay-India, “Until now, Chremistica ribhoi was known only from Saiden village and Lailad, near Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district. Her sons were showing symptoms of skeletal fluorosis, which is caused by consuming water with excess fluoride content. Her daughter was spared from this ‘pani wala bemar’ (water-borne disease), she says. Dharani Saikia, a 62-year-old social worker based in Kampur town in Nagaon district, has been gathering evidence of fluorosis cases in Assam, particularly in Nagaon, Hojai and Karbi Anglong districts for over two decades. He says that as of 2020, 13 districts are affected. In 2022, the Ministry of Jal Shakti confirmed fluoride contamination beyond safe levels in nine districts of Assam. However, no official findings detailing contamination levels of groundwater, number of affected people and symptoms have not been published since nearly a decade ago, when surveys were conducted in 2017-18. The rhino population, however, was re-established through the wild-to-wild translocation under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV2020) and rhino rehabilitation programmes. A recent study on the re-established population, introduced through two routes — translocation from other protected areas, and rehabilitation and release — between 2012 and 2021 offers encouraging signs of adaptation in their restored habitat. The study also followed the first generation (F1) of rhinos born in Manas. Manas National Park lies in Assam’s Chirang and Baksa districts in northeast India and borders the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan to the north. Between 2008 and 2021, 22 greater one-horned rhinos were translocated from Kaziranga National Park and Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary as a part of efforts to restore the park’s rhino population. In addition, 20 rehabilitated rhinos from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation were released in the park between 2006 and 2021, as Manas was considered a more suitable natural habitat than keeping them in rehabilitation facilities. Breeding and calving pattern Researchers recorded 35 rhino births in Manas during the study period. Nineteen calves were born to translocated females and nine to rehabilitated rhinos. Five calves were born to the F1 generation, while two calves were recorded without identified mothers. Conducted by Kaziranga’s Tiger Cell in coordination with the Fishing Cat Project, the survey report was released on February 22 – International Fishing Cat Day. “This is one of the highest numbers in the freshwater floodplain, which reinstates KNP as one of its finest habitats. It is important for us to know that these are good habitats for fishing cats,” Sonali Ghosh, Director, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, tells Mongabay-India. Analysing camera trap images The survey drew from bycatch data through camera traps originally set up to monitor tigers. “It is not possible to conduct a separate survey for every species found in KNP, as there are logistical and time constraints. We had to study more than 14 lakh images from the camera traps,” says Ghosh. Analysing these images presented some challenges, says Tiasa Adhya, a wildlife biologist and one of the co-founders of the Fishing Cat Project. “If the weather is foggy, you won&#8217;t get good images. If it is raining, that’s a problem too. Sometimes the animal comes too near the trap, while sometimes only a portion of the body is visible,” she says. As the camera-trap grid was originally designed for larger felids, wildlife officials believe that the number 57 could be an undercount. 							<![CDATA[The National Green Tribunal (NGT) stayed a recent Assam government order directing the deployment of about 1,600 personnel from the Assam Forest Protection Force (AFPF) for election duty ahead of April 9 state assembly polls. On March 19, an order from the state&#8217;s Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department directed forest personnel to assist the state police during the elections between April 3 and return by April 10. The issue garnered attention when a group of retired bureaucrats and conservationists across the country wrote to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the chief secretary of Assam seeking immediate withdrawal of the order. Amid the criticisms, Delhi-based advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal filed a petition before the NGT on April 1 and argued that the order is against the provisions of a 2024 Supreme Court order against the use of forest staff for election duty. It also states that diverting forest personnel from their primary duties of protection and conservation of biological resources goes against the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, in letter and spirit. The region had tigers in the 1990s, but there has been no documented evidence to establish the status of the tiger population. Small camera trapping exercises in earlier years did not bear fruit until recently, when around 60 cameras were installed and a tiger’s presence was successfully documented. The Dibru Saikhowa National Park and Biosphere Reserve comes under the Tinsukia Wildlife Division. In 1997, the biosphere reserve, with an area of 765 square kilometres, was declared. Then, in 1999, its core area of 340 sq km was declared a national park. “Since the inception of the national park, this is the first time a tiger has been caught on camera in Dibru Saikhowa,” Bibison Tokbi, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Tinsukia Wildlife Division, tells Mongabay-India. “We captured the tiger twice on camera trap, first on December 14, 2025, and then on January 1, 2026. Both the images were of the same tiger.” He adds that the staff have recently discovered some pug marks of another tiger as well, indicating the presence of multiple big cats. Within days, water had risen above the ankle across his field in the Cachar district of Assam. “In the past, rain would settle in,” he says. “But over the last decade, our farmlands have suffered tremendously; they have been rendered essentially useless. Rains wash away our fields and with them, our efforts to ready the soil for cultivation. Nothing but grass grows on that land after that.” Across southern Assam’s Barak Valley, which is made up of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi districts, farmers say rainfall has become more erratic over the past decade, disrupting paddy and other crops at critical stages. ​Geographic impediment Assam&#8217;s geography plays a crucial role in its agricultural challenges. Studies show that almost 29% of Assam’s land is flood-prone, exposing fields and farmlands to hydrological risks such as inundation and surface runoff. Assam lies within a foreland basin shaped by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, and it is characterised by the Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, surrounded by hills and plateaus. 							<![CDATA[A new study analysing two decades of organised crop-guarding efforts to deter elephants from entering farms has found a counterintuitive outcome: villages with active monitoring recorded two to three times more elephant deaths. The elephant monitoring squads were set up in 2004 in Assam’s Sonitpur district where human-elephant conflict had led to high fatalities on both sides. The aim behind setting up the squads was to keep elephants away from human habitation to reduce conflict and hence reduce deaths. The study set out to find whether this intervention was indeed effective in decreasing deaths, but found increased elephant mortality instead. The study findings however, need to be viewed with caution. While they show an association between an increased number of Antidepredation Squads (ADSs) and increased elephant deaths, they are not a direct proof of causation, notes WWF-India which helped set up these squads in Sonitpur. The data shows that there are more elephant deaths in areas where ADSs have been deployed. In a moment, OIL took it all, stripping me of everything.” This stanza is from a poem written by Papul Gogoi, a resident of Baghjan, Assam, from the point of view of a (fictional) woman who lost everything in the Baghjan blowout, a 2020 industrial disaster that had widespread impacts on people and the environment. The poem, expressing grief and despair about the blowout, is part of a book Our Burden of Grief published in October 2025. On May 27, 2020, there was a leak in Oil India Limited’s (OIL) Well No. 5 in Baghjan Oil Field, Tinsukia, Assam, resulting in the uncontrollable flow of the natural gas (methane gas), crude oil and condensate droplets. People living nearby had to be evacuated. A subsequent blast on June 9, 2020, completely burned down 12 houses and more than 10,000 residents from nearly a dozen villages within a three-kilometre radius of the rig were affected and displaced. The fire engulfed adjacent wetlands, killing endangered birds and animals. The fire lasted for almost six months, and OIL only succeeded in extinguishing it entirely on November 15, 2020. The impact of the incident, one of the worst industrial disasters in modern India, has been captured in the book Our Burden of Grief. Speaking to Mongabay-India, Dr. S. Borgohain, Veterinary Officer, KNP, who treated the elephant, said, “As per our tentative diagnosis, the elephant died from respiratory failure. We conducted the postmortem as per which poisoning has been ruled out. There is no indication from the materials found in its digestive tract that the elephant was not eating properly. We have collected its vital organs like liver, lung, spleen, kidney etc. for further pathological tests at the forensic laboratory.” Bijit Dihingia, Range Officer, Bagori (Western Range), KNP told Mongabay-India, “During the tourist season in KNP (November-May), elephant safaris are in huge demand.” Elephant safaris are carried out mainly in two ranges — by private operators at Bagori (the western range) and by the forest department at Kohora (the central range). “While the elephants are required to carry out two trips daily (from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. and from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.), during the weekend they are made to carry out three as tourist inflow increases,” Dihingia said. “Currently there are 39 elephants running safaris for private operators. One elephant carries four adult tourists per trip and smaller elephants carry three people. 							<![CDATA[On the cold, foggy night of December 20, eight elephants — three adults and five calves — were killed after colliding with the superfast Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under the Lumding division in Assam. This includes a new born calf, delivered on the track from the impact of collision. The impact was so severe that five bogies of the train, along with the locomotive, were derailed. However, no human deaths or injuries were reported. The incident occurred near Sangjurai and Patiapam, villages under the Kampur subdivision in Nagaon district, around 126 km from Guwahati. According to a statement released by Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR), other trains such as the Rangiya–New Tinsukia Express, Guwahati–Jorhat Town Jan Shatabdi Express, Guwahati–Badarpur Vistadome Express, and New Tinsukia–Rangiya Express, were cancelled that day, following the incident. Expressing regret over the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a thorough enquiry. Home to 68 fish species, more than 234 native and migratory bird species, including 18 globally threatened vertebrates as well as diverse amphibians, reptiles and more, Deepor Beel as it is known in Assam, is a biodiversity hotspot and a Ramsar wetland site. It functions as a corridor and a feeding ground for elephants, and is a groundwater recharge site. For the 800 fishing households dependent on it, the wetland contributes an estimated ₹11.6 crore (₹116 million) annually. But fishers now report declining catches and the disappearance of several species. A team from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata monitored the wetland from November 2024 to February 2025, studying blooms of two common toxin-producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), Planktothrix and Microcystis, and the environmental conditions driving their formation. “Organisms in lakes and ponds often encounter algal blooms during their lifespan. Once thriving in the tropical rainforests of the Upper Brahmaputra Valley, the only colobine primate (characterised by their leaf-based diet) in the region, is now in a precarious situation. The Valley was once covered by a vast lowland tropical rainforest. However, over the years, agricultural expansion, deforestation and development of tea gardens have turned this forest into scattered fragments. A new study published in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity surveyed 40 rainforest fragments across six districts of the Upper Brahmaputra Valley between February 2019 and January 2020. Researchers found capped langurs in only 11 sites, with evidence that they had disappeared from at least seven forests where they were once recorded, a decade ago. “By comparing the surveys of the same fragments, it became clear that capped langurs have now disappeared from several of these areas,” said Narayan Sharma, an author of the study, and assistant professor at the Department of Environmental Biology and Wildlife Sciences in Cotton University, Guwahati. “This kind of longitudinal study helps us track not just numbers but also their overall occurrence and distribution over time.”  Capped langur in Bordubi. Hearing a commotion at a neighbour’s house, Marak went over and learned that a black snake that had entered the house had been killed by the owners. “As the snake was already dead, I volunteered to throw its carcass in the nearby bushes,” Marak, a mahout by profession, tells Mongabay India. “While holding its head, I felt a prick on the little finger of my right hand. As the snake was already dead, I ignored the bite.” However, as the night progressed, Marak&#8217;s condition worsened. He had difficulty breathing and even swallowing water. Next morning, he was taken to a local faith healer but he was not of much help. On the insistence of his friend who lived in Boko in Assam, he was taken to Kamrup Civil Hospital in Guwahati, a 20-minute drive from his home. “At around 12.30 p.m., he was brought to our hospital. On initial examination, he had ptosis (drooping eyelids), difficulty in swallowing, throat pain and body ache,” recalls Dr. Hemen Nath, who treated Marak. “The dead snake was identified to be the lesser black krait.
