							<![CDATA[Across the forests of central India, young tigers set out on long journeys once they reach two to three years of age; they leave their mother’s territory and search for their own. But the surrounding landscapes are no longer as conducive. Once continuous forest blocks are now fragmented by farms, roads, rail lines, and settlements. A recent study published in the Journal for Nature Conservation examines how tigers navigate such altered terrain. The study was conducted by researchers from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing and the Institute of Integrated Learning in Management (IILM) University. “Many studies talk about habitat loss. Our focus is on building computational models that use data to understand [habitat] connectivity,” says Saurabh Shanu, Assistant Dean and an associate professor at IILM University, and one of the study’s co-authors. The goal was to identify which parts of the landscape still allow safe passage for tigers, and which are at risk of being lost. To achieve this, the researchers combined satellite data with two analytical approaches — graph theory and game theory. “Graph theory helps us connect different places on the map. Game theory helps us understand how a tiger responds to things like prey, roads, or other animals,” Shanu explains. Now, there is nothing but paddy,&#8221; Sahu says. Now in his sixties, Sahu remembers a time when he practiced organic farming in the early 2000s. He used to make manure from cow dung on his farm and saved seeds for the next season. He then had 20 cattle. But things changed when paddy started getting better prices. Today, on his 11 acres of land, he grows only paddy. When asked for the reason, he answers, “It is because of the price of paddy. No matter the variety, the government buys it at ₹3,100 per quintal.” This trend is not unique to Sahu. Recent data highlights a broader transformation in agricultural practices across the state. Over the past five years, the certified area under organic cultivation in the state has shrunk sharply. The area under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) certification was around 23,209 hectares in 2020–21, but by 2024–25, it had fallen to just about 6,822 hectares. This represents a decline of nearly 70%. There was no official report of conflict as well as no records of carcass recovery or poaching incidents. This indicated that she had not died within the reserve. However, for nearly three years, there was no photographic trace of her anywhere in the official monitoring grids of Madhya Pradesh. Then, in 2021, camera traps in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve (ATR) in the neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh captured a tigress moving through the sal forest with cubs trailing behind her. The stripe pattern verification confirmed what the field staff suspected. She was the same tigress. She had crossed over from Madhya Pradesh to Chhattisgarh &#8211; nearly 400 kilometres. Forest officials later named her Jhumri. In official monitoring records, she was catalogued as TK-8. Experts say that when she disappeared from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, she had reached dispersal age, a stage in a tiger’s life, usually between two and three years old, when remaining in the natal territory is no longer possible. Bandhavgarh is one of India’s most densely populated tiger reserves. In such landscapes, ecological success creates pressure. When prey density is high and breeding females are established, cub survival increases. But territory is finite. Adult males hold defined ranges that overlap with resident females. Sub-adults, once independent, are gradually pushed outward, said Samir Kumar Sinha, head of conservation at the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). 							<![CDATA[Deep inside the tribal landscape of Bailadila hills in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, a fern from an older chapter of Earth’s history grows in scattered clusters along shaded slopes and perennial streams. But this rare species is losing its fragile habitat as mining expands deeper into the forests. With a renewed push for iron ore extraction, many fear that this ancient plant is now at risk of extinction in the region. Considered a living fossil, the fern is significant in the scientific community for understanding the evolution of trees. Its origins date back to the Carboniferous (about 420 to 300 million years ago) and Triassic (about 251 to 200 million years ago) periods, when early forests were forming. While many related species vanished during mass extinction events, some lineages survived and continued. This fern is one of those few that survived. It means the fern, scientifically known as Alsophila spinulosa, carries a genetic line that has changed little over millions of years. This is one of the few ferns that form a tall, woody stem and grow like a small tree, supported by a trunk that can reach several metres in length. In the local Koya dialect, the fern is known as Handa Kusir; its tender leaves are eaten, and people show a distinct attachment to it. However, with the in-principle forest clearance granted in June this year, experts and locals warn that habitat loss could lead to the tree ferns disappearing from the area. 							<![CDATA[In the dense forests straddling the border of Gariaband and Dhamtari districts in Chhattisgarh, an unusual silence prevails these days. In villages surrounding the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, gram sabha meetings are being held one after another, and one question echoes through them all — will we have to leave the villages where our families have lived for generations, deep inside these forests? Residents of 17 village panchayats claim that over the past few months, officials from the Forest Department have been conducting surveys, showing maps, measuring fields, and marking land. They are concerned that these actions may be the first steps in a plan to relocate entire settlements for tiger conservation. The Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve is one of the oldest protected areas in Chhattisgarh. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984, but tensions began in 2004 when it was proposed as a tiger reserve. Since then, the Forest Department and local Indigenous communities have often been at odds. Arjun Singh Nayak, president of the Gram Sabha Federation of the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, said that forest officials began restricting their traditional rights, especially their collection of minor forest produce. Forest guards falsely accused several tribal women of illegally collecting wood from the core area and even filed criminal cases against them, he claimed. 							<![CDATA[Chhattisgarh has emerged as a new frontier in Asian elephant conservation, hosting a metapopulation of 250-300 elephants that have been expanding their range from neighbouring Odisha and Jharkhand since the year 2000. While this growth signals a possible recovery of elephant habitats in central India, it has also led to increasingly frequent, and sometimes dangerous, contact with local communities. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Chhattisgarh reported 303 human deaths from elephant-related incidents between 2019 and 2024, about 15% of the national total, even though the state is home to only 1% of India’s elephants. The Chhattisgarh Forest and Climate Change Department has also recorded over 80 elephant deaths in the past six years, as of 2024. A collaborative six-year study by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the Chhattisgarh Forest Department now offers deeper insight into this issue. “This region has significantly higher human-elephant conflict compared to others in India. Human deaths are also alarmingly high despite the relatively low elephant population,” says Lakshminarayanan Natarajan from the Elephant Cell, WII, and lead author of the study. Where forests meet fields To understand elephant-human interactions and their impact in this region, the researchers focused on northern Chhattisgarh, a landscape of sal forests and rich mineral reserves. The region is predominantly rural. While rice is the main crop, farmers also cultivate seasonal vegetables, pulses, maize, wheat, and sugarcane. Sahu resides in Patharra, a village in the Bemetara district of Chhattisgarh, where an ethanol plant commenced operations in 2024. She claims that the black, foul-smelling wastewater discharged from the plant has destroyed several of her paddy fields. “I have three and a half acres of land. That’s what sustains my livelihood. But my paddy crop has completely failed,” she told Mongabay India. The problems extend beyond crop loss. “Because of the constant stench, it is difficult to find labourers or even work in my own fields. No one wants to step in because of the unbearable smell from the distillery.” Her concerns are echoed across Patharra, a village of about 250 households. Residents say the stench has made life unbearable. At any time of day or night, a strong smell spreads through the village, forcing people to cover their faces with cloth. Village residents fear that the wastewater discharged by the plant will eventually contaminate the groundwater. They have been protesting for over 10 months in many innovative ways. Their story, shared on condition of anonymity, offers a glimpse into a lesser-discussed form of inter-state migration in India, from agriculturally advanced states such as Punjab to the fertile but relatively underdeveloped lands of Central India. In the 1990s and early 2000s, they used to travel to Central India, leasing their mechanical harvesters to cultivate crops on local farmlands. During one such visit, a local resident from Dharav Parav village in Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh approached them with the sale of a sizable plot of land at an exceptionally low cost. While the soil quality paled in comparison to the fertile fields of Punjab, the sheer size of the land, coupled with a price point ten times lower than that of their home region, presented an undeniable opportunity. Eventually, the brothers acquired 10 acres of land in Dharav Parav village in Bankhedi tehsil and set about agricultural expansion never seen before in the area. Their success story is far from unique. Over time, an increasing number of farmers from northern Indian states such as Punjab and Haryana have followed suit, relocating to central states such as Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. A few hundred such households are settled in the Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh. 							<![CDATA[Odisha recently became one of three states in the country to grant Habitat Rights (HR) under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (FRA) to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). The state recognised Habitat Rights for seven of its 13 PVTGs and other traditional communities. India&#8217;s Forest Rights Act, enacted to undo historical injustices to tribal and other forest-dwelling communities in India, recognises a range of rights for these communities. The different rights ensure that indigenous and forest-dwelling communities can access their ancestral land and resources, carry on their traditional livelihood practices and utilise, protect and conserve the forests. What are Habitat Rights? Habitat Rights are classified under the FRA&#8217;s Community Forest Rights. They recognise traditional and customary rights over &#8220;demographic and geographic spread out, socio-cultural, economic, and livelihood systems, as well as traditional knowledge to ecological systems and biodiversity,&#8221; defines a report by the UN Development Programme and the Tribal and Scheduled Caste Development Department of the Chhattisgarh government. 							<![CDATA[An investigation by a state government body alleges key documents were forged to secure clearances for mining in Chhattisgarh&#8217;s Hasdeo Arand forest. The report’s findings align with the claims of residents in the affected area, who have long argued that consent for mining was never taken from them. The investigation, conducted by the Chhattisgarh State Scheduled Tribes Commission (CGSTC), pertains to the Parsa coal block, a 1,252 hectare expanse in the Surguja and Surajpur districts. The CGSTC made the findings of its investigation public, in a letter addressed to the district magistrate of Surguja on November 4. In the letter, the CGSTC said it has found inconsistencies in the number of people who attended the gram sabha (village council) meetings. It found evidence that the proposal for mining was added after the gram sabha meetings had already concluded. The Commission recommended the clearance for the project be cancelled and directed Vilas Bhoskar, Surguja’s district magistrate, to reconvene gram sabhas in three affected villages within 15 days of the letter’s issuance, to discuss the issue in accordance with the law. “So far, there’s been no response. We wrote to the district administration, state government, and the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, but none of these authorities have responded to our findings,” Bhanu Pratap Singh, chairman of the CGSTC , told Mongabay India. 							<![CDATA[A new study capturing how coal mining transforms land use over time demonstrates the challenges in restoring this land upon mine closure – an important aspect of a just transition as India plans to move away from coal. Three functional coal mines in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh degraded 35% of the area’s native land cover, the study, conducted by researchers from various institutes, found. The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Environmental Science in July. Coal production and mining is expected to grow till 2040, before being phased down in order to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The damaging environmental impacts of coal mining are well known, but repurposing and restoring this land is emerging as the next frontier for the energy transition. According to the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability &amp; Technology (iFOREST), a think tank, 440,000 (4.4 lakh) hectares of land are currently used for mining and thermal power production in India, most of it concentrated in the eastern coal belt of the country. Over the last 10 years, coal public sector undertakings have increased their green cover by only 18,849 hectares, a fraction of the land that mines currently occupy. Coal mining regulations have made it easier for mines to expand their operations with fewer compliances. In 2021, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change said mines could begin operations in non-forest parts of a coal block, even if the entire block was pending final forest clearance. 							<![CDATA[In the union budget 2024, the emphasis on low-carbon farming practices, breeding crops for climate stress, and a non-populistic approach, seemed to be the hallmark for agriculture. The cut in fertiliser allocation is a bold political move, given the upward trend in fertiliser consumption observed since 2017. The call for breeding for climate stress tolerance brings much needed focus back on agricultural research. The commitment to transitioning one crore farmers to natural farming, while adopting a value chain and branding approach is commendable for its mitigation emphasis. However, forward linkages through branding and certification, and the backward linkage through the bio-input resource centres (BRCs) would help ensure sustainability of this transition. Certification would help distinguish natural farming outputs and fetch premium prices for products and improve profitability. Whereas, BRCs will provide farmers access to bio resources in which animal manure, neem and bio culture play an important role. The government intends to set up 10,000 need-based bio-input resource centres (BRCs). This proposal will help address issues of raw material paucity, high maintenance cost of cattle, and the labour-intensiveness of bio-input production processes, which are the most cited factors that limit natural and other non-chemical input-based farming practices from being scaled up. The land is now a happy mix of yellows, greens and reds. From a seasonal paddy to barren land in summers and winters, Devmati is now able to grow vegetables in her backyard. “For years we have lived in the dark,” says Devmati. “In 2021, our villages were electrified through solar power. Apart from just lights and fans, we could now irrigate our farms as well. From a single paddy crop a year, since last year we started harvesting vegetables on our lands, too. 							<![CDATA[Chhattisgarh-based environmental activist Alok Shukla was conferred with the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize on April 29 for championing the cause of Hasdeo Arand – an embattled forest landscape in central India rich with both biodiversity and coal reserves. Headquartered in the United States, the Goldman Environmental Prize seeks to recognise grassroots “environmental heroes” from six continental regions of the world every year. Since 1990, the Prize has awarded individuals for their “sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk.” It is especially attentive to leaders who are able to catalyse change through community participation. Shukla, 43, represents Asia in this year’s win. Shukla’s journey as an environmental activist began soon after he graduated from university in 2005, after witnessing the effects of industrial pollution from infrastructure development activities in the cities of Raipur and Raigarh. Inspired by veteran activists Medha Patkar and former bureaucrat Brahm Dev Sharma, he joined movements opposing sponge iron industries in Chhattisgarh in his early days of activism. By 2011, he decided to stay in Hasdeo and fight against the allocation of coal mines in the forest by convening the Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan (CBA), an umbrella body for citizen movements across the state. The struggle to keep coal underground in Hasdeo has been a decades-long one. Mongol Ghatual and his wife Purnima of Digardi village in the Purulia district of West Bengal on the eastern edge of the Plateau are busy collecting the flowers, a non-timber forest produce (NTFP) which is an important source of livelihood for them. Mongol owns four mahua trees. His cousins have a few more. Each mature tree produces around 60 to 80 kg of mahua flowers on an average. The Ghatuals are unhappy that it is taking them an entire day to collect the flowers. “We used to start collecting flowers by four in the morning and by 10 or 11 am, we would be mostly done. But this year, it is past noon and we are still not done with it. This untimely rain is spoiling our mahua. We are toiling harder, but for less,” said Ghatual. The rain clouds gather for yet another untimely shower. The slight drop in temperature and humidity make the flowers stay longer on the tree; they keep falling almost the entire day which is not the case usually. If the sun persists, the flowers start shedding early in the morning till around 10 am. 							<![CDATA[India’s ambitious clean energy goals, focusing on increasing renewables and reducing coal use, may heighten disparities between two regions of the country – one covering western and southern states and the other, northern and eastern states – finds a recent working paper. Since 2014, India has ramped up its efforts to transition to renewable energy sources, with a goal of 175 GW of renewable capacity by 2022 and, more recently a 500 GW target by 2030. The working paper by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), a public economics and policy research institution, notes that states in India’s western and southern regions have abundant variable renewable energy (VRE) sources, such as solar and wind, while states in the northern and eastern regions of the country, have fewer VRE sources but have more revenue-generating coal reserves. The VRE-rich states in the west and south are more prosperous economies too and have a better Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth in comparison to the VRE-poor states. Between 2012 and 2019, the eight VRE-rich state economies had an average growth rate of 7.75%, while the VRE-poor states had a growth rate of 6.5%. Not only did the VRE-rich states grow faster, but their economies are also more than 150% larger in absolute terms, says the study. As the use of renewable energy in electricity production increases, states with fewer sources end up spending more on renewable energy setups and earning less from them, says the paper. The job of waste management is still a taboo in India,&#8221; she says. &#8220;But when our cleaning efforts made Ambikapur India&#8217;s cleanest small city in 2017, the mindset of the people changed,&#8221; she continues. &#8220;Everyone now calls us Swachhta didis. People appreciate our work in keeping the city garbage-free. It is a very nice feeling.&#8221; In Swachh Survekshan (India&#8217;s annual cleanliness survey), Ambikapur first won India&#8217;s cleanest small city tag (with a population under 200,000) in 2017, followed by India&#8217;s Best Small City in &#8216;Innovation &amp; Best Practices&#8217; (with a population under 300,000) in 2018. However, the large quantities of ash released every day is affecting the health of the people. The coal found in India has 30-40% ash content. This ash emanating from the burning of coal in thermal power plants not only contains particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5), black carbon, arsenic, boron, chromium and lead, but also silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, ferric oxide and calcium oxide. These ash particles fly for many kilometres in the air, and eventually settle on water and other surfaces. The coal found in India has 30-40% ash content. Chandrakar tried giving all the medicines prescribed by the local veterinary doctor for fever, low appetite and weakness, but nothing seemed to be working. Then, a blood sample was taken, and the report revealed that the haemoglobin level of the cow was very low. For years, Chandrakar has been feeding dry straws of paddy to his cattle, three times a day. But in the last few years, his cattle have become increasingly weak. They would fall ill frequently and faint on some days. Like Chandrakar, many farmers in Chhattisgarh have recently had to spend additional money for treating their cattle. Dr. Nalin Sharma, associated with the Livestock Development Department’s state-level Disease Detection Laboratory, reveals that more than half of the animals whose blood samples were taken to the laboratory, were found to be malnourished and their haemoglobin level was much below normal. The farmers slowly realised that these health issues in the cattle had something to do with the fodder. “Nutrition is the biggest problem for the local breed of cattle. They do not get green fodder for almost eight months. The system or tradition of providing green fodder is non-existent in the state. Due to the disillusionment of the young generation towards farming, this problem is increasing day by day,” Dr. Sharma tells Mongabay-India. 							<![CDATA[India is on the way to decommissioning thermal power plants (TPP) and disposing of coal mines at a large scale in the coming few years. However, the country has no legal framework on how this transition will take place. Estimates say that due to these measures, millions of people will lose their livelihood, a large amount of land would need closure or repurposing and several toxic materials need to be taken care of. In the process of disposing coal mines, the country will deal with more than 100,000 hectares of land, which will need proper closure or repurposing. Similar challenges will occur with the decommissioning of around 50-60 giga watt (GW) of TPPs in the next 10 years or so. With the decommissioning of TPPs, another 20,000 ha of land will be available. How will this transition happen and who will monitor the process? There is no clarity. These are a few pertinent questions related to India’s energy transition.
