							<![CDATA[In the mist-draped forests of rural Darjeeling, stories travel from one generation to the next as softly and steadily as mountain rain. Among these stories is one that almost every elder in deep forest villages knows: there is a bird whose call brings the rain. Long before weather apps and satellite forecasts, people listened to the forests, and the forests, in their own ways, signalled back. In Sirikhola-Gurdum near the Singalila National Park in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, this signal came from a bird whose call was said to predict rain within hours. The call was a distinctive, descending series that often resembled maniacal, falling laughter, carrying through the thick canopy. Everyone recognised the call, yet very few had ever seen the bird itself. A village legend meets field science I first heard this story from Mingma Tamang, an experienced field technician working at ATREE. He later worked with me during my Ph.D. research. Years before we trudged through the forests of Darjeeling together, he had listened to this call as a child. Speaking about the representation of environment in elections, wildlife biologist and co-founder of The Fishing Cat Project, Tiasa Adhya told Mongabay-India, “The ecological and environmental problems in West Bengal are the conversion of wetlands, decreasing freshwater flow in Sundarbans, indiscriminate sand mining, mining for minerals and ores, and conflict with elephants in both north and south West Bengal. These agendas have consequences for both nature and society and should come up strongly in policy manifestos. These are unprecedented times that require a change in the way we understand &#8216;development&#8217; and an increase in ecological literacy that is linked to human health and well-being.” Negative interactions between humans and wildlife are also a major concern in the state, said environmentalist and co-founder of Human and Environment Alliance League (HEAL), a non-profit based in Kolkata, Suvrajyoti Chatterjee “Negative interactions between humans and elephants cause a lot of fatalities in south West Bengal,&#8221; he told Mongabay-India. &#8220;Many places lack street lights, and the habit of open defecation among people causes fatalities. In it, a young content creator who goes by the name Rock Lama on Instagram, stood before the smouldering waste, appealing to the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for immediate intervention to stop what he describes as the routine illegal dumping of the town’s waste along the river. The video by the 24-year-old Jaigaon resident, spread widely across social media platforms, sparking discussions about rural waste management, governance, environmental negligence, and the growing waste crisis in smaller towns and Panchayat areas where populations have increased with time and waste has increased proportionately, without infrastructure to manage it. In July 2025, while preparing to return after one such outing, Mahato counted his goats and found one missing. “In this forest adjacent to our village, on the other side of which lies Jharkhand, there are quite a few carnivores. I saw flashes of something dragging my goat away but couldn&#8217;t recognise the animal properly,” Mahato describes. “There isn&#8217;t much wolf presence in this forest, and it would be difficult for a small animal like a jackal to drag a goat so quickly,” he added. Mahato predicted that it could’ve been a bigger animal, like a leopard, which took the goat away. During the 15-hour overnight trip, forest staff sprinkled the animals with water every one to two hours to maintain hydration. For the species, it was a return to a historic home. For the conservationists present, it was a moment of &#8220;quiet satisfaction&#8221;, Shahnawaz Khan, the Lead for Aquatic Habitats at WWF-India, said in an email response to Mongabay-India. Khan recalls that there was concern about the animals&#8217; condition after the long journey and the team watched with relief as the gharials, “observed to be alert, responsive, and in good health”, paused briefly before crawling into the river. The reintroduction project was a coordinated effort between the West Bengal Forest Directorate and WWF-India. A recent report, published in the journal Reptiles &amp; Amphibians, outlines the project aimed at enhancing the likelihood of long-term survival of the gharials in the lower Ganga Basin. The gharial’s population has significantly declined over the years due to loss from water impoundment, sand mining, hunting, and intensive fishing. Only about 650 adult gharials remain in the wild. Sitting at a small tea shop run by his wife in Bhagabatpur village of West Bengal, in the Sundarbans region, Das talks about the increasing use of pesticides and fertilisers, and increasing plastic pollution in this mangrove ecosystem. In recent years, he has had to ramp up the use of fertilisers as the soil quality has depleted because of increasing salinity and the increase in pests because of climate change. But this growing amount of pesticides, fertilisers and plastic waste is causing heavy metal and microplastic pollution in the waters flowing through the Sundarbans and draining in the Bay of Bengal. 							<![CDATA[A stable, ten-member Indian wolf pack, recently found in Madhaiganj in West Bengal, has brought new attention to a species often overlooked in the conservation landscape of eastern India. The Indian wolf has an estimated wild population of around three thousand individuals. Many populations survive in scattered, human-altered habitats, making them highly vulnerable to habitat loss and conflict. The importance of this study increased after the most recent International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List assessment, which, based on new genomic evidence, recognised the Indian wolf as likely a genetically distinct subspecies and listed it as vulnerable. Following this assessment, the conservation value of each population is expected to increase further, particularly in regions such as West Bengal, where research is limited and protected habitats are scarce. “What we are seeing is the apex predator of India’s grasslands surviving in an anthropogenically modified landscape,&#8221; explained lead researcher Arkajyoti Mukherjee, a postdoctoral researcher at IIT Kharagpur and Secretary of the Wildlife Information and Nature Guide Society. &#8220;This is a unique carnivore persisting in one of the most altered habitats in eastern India. The headlights of vehicles passing through the town pick up a flash of pale fur, a tail curling low, and two unblinking eyes. The leopard slowly slips into the dark, silently all the way. For decades, this small town was known for its biting winters and endless fog. Outsiders had a typical question for local residents: “How do you live there? It’s always so cold and gloomy!” Now the refrain has shifted: “How do you live with the leopards?” For older residents, the routine leopard sightings are a startling transformation. Many had only ever heard second-hand stories of leopard sightings and witnessed livestock predation incidents. Sukhia Pokhri back then, was ringed by barren grasslands, with the tree line far from homes. Firewood collected from the surrounding forests was the primary fuel for cooking and heating, and heavy extraction stripped the nearby slopes of tree cover. Over the years, however, improved road access, rising incomes, and stricter enforcement of bans on fuelwood extraction shifted households to LPG and electricity. The forests regenerated, creeping right up to the backyards of houses on the town’s edge. And with the trees came the wildlife. Elusive leopards have adapted with remarkable ease to these human-dominated landscapes. They skirt houses, pad along farmland, and often use motorable roads as travel corridors. It is a 66-year-old multipurpose project located across the river Damodar, along the border of the eastern states of West Bengal and Jharkhand. The rally started from Maheshnadi checkpost in Neturia block of Purulia district, West Bengal, and travelled a five-km stretch to Panchet Zero Point in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district. The fishers staged a demonstration, shouting slogans like “DVC Murdabaad” (down with DVC), “DVC hosiayar” (beware), and “solar project bandh karo” (scrap the solar project). DVC refers to the Damodar Valley Corporation, a public sector utility that owns and operates the Panchet dam, where floating solar power projects of 105 MW capacity have already been awarded for development. A similar or higher capacity is awaiting the tender process. Fishers who have been relying on the dam&#8217;s waters for their livelihoods allege that nearly 1,500 families would not only lose their livelihoods but also their primary source of affordable nutrition, solely due to the first phase of the project. They have called for a public gathering at Panchet on October 15, calling for the scrapping of the project. “About 1,500 families of three panchayats in Nituria block—Sarabari, Raibandh, and Guniara—earn their living by fishing from the reservoir. 							<![CDATA[Driven by habitat loss, human activities and climate change, Asian elephants are increasingly forced to navigate human-dominated landscapes, often resorting to crop foraging to meet their nutritional needs. Elephants adjust their foraging behaviour, social interactions, and even vocal communication, to adapt to human presence. But how do these adjustments affect them internally? A new study published this year in Scientific Reports reveals that elephants facing frequent human interference exhibit significantly higher levels of physiological stress compared to those living in more natural habitats. According to the corresponding author of the study, professor Raman Sukumar from the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, elephant-human interactions vary significantly across different regions, ranging from passive and active deterrents to aggressive retaliation. “Elephants are already under stress from shrinking habitats. Aggressive human responses to crop-raiding can further amplify their stress, often more than human presence alone,” he says. Monitoring physiological stress Glucocorticoid hormones produced by the adrenal glands of elephants are crucial in stress response, making them key indicators of how they physiologically adjust to human disturbances. Similarly, thyroid hormones, particularly triiodothyronine (T3), reflect the metabolic state of animals facing nutritional stressors. Sanjeeta Sharma Pokharel, Assistant Professor at Kyoto University&#8217;s Hakubi Centre and lead author of the paper, has been analysing elephant dung to understand trends in the faecal levels of glucocorticoid metabolites and T3 (fGCM/fT3) in relation to regional habitat fragmentation, human responses, and dietary variations. From midnight to dawn, it rained 234.2 mm causing severe waterlogging that the city had not experienced in almost four decades. Kolkata is used to cyclonic storms bringing the city to a standstill with fallen trees and electric poles. This time however, there was no cyclone. The rain mostly stopped around 8.30 a.m. Yet, water alone paused civic life — from flight operations to railway and bus services. This cloudburst-like situation, where rain falls heavily in a short period, is new to the city located in the world’s largest deltaic landscape, the Bengal delta. Kolkata was unprepared. Informal settlements, ground floors and basements of houses, high rises and hospitals were all flooded with drainage water or overflow from waterbodies. People were stranded in multi-storey apartments without electricity or an operational elevator for hours. Damaged cars, motorbikes, and vans were left in the middle of roads. Loose, live wires created safety hazards. Items from grocery and garments to electronics and electrical goods worth millions of rupees were damaged in stores and markets. While the boat he was on tore through the waters he caught a glimpse of a fishing cat, the apex predator of the wetlands, getting ready to take the plunge at a target. As Santra got his camera ready, the fishing cat did something unexpected. It sprang on an adult monitor lizard and dragged the prey towards the bushes. In those few fleeting seconds, Santra clicked multiple pictures on his camera which have now become rare natural history documentation. Santra, a naturalist working in Gujarat, told Mongabay India that the incident occurred near Pirkhali, a part of Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary which is popular among tourists for wildlife sightings. “Our boat was near Pirkhali-6 where we saw the fishing cat preying on the monitor lizard,” he said, adding, “I am from Bagnan in West Bengal which has a sizable population of fishing cats. As a naturalist, I have studied the ecology and behaviour of fishing cats. But I have never seen them preying on a monitor lizard.” Wildlife photographer Sudipta Chakraborty also took a picture of the same incident, from a different angle. 							<![CDATA[The sighting of rusty-spotted cats (Prionailurus rubiginosus), considered one of the world&#8217;s smallest wild cat species, in the Purulia district of West Bengal earlier this year has excited both forest officials and environmentalists alike. It is the ninth wild cat species identified in the state. In January 2025, the cats were photographed by camera traps set up by the Kolkata-based NGO Human and Environment Alliance League (HEAL) as part of another project, supported by the Duleep Matthai Nature Conservation Trust. “The project, initiated in June last year (2024), is an exploratory study to understand the conservation status and threats faced by pangolins in Purulia district. Initially, we installed six camera traps but now we have 17-18 camera traps which we are trying to deploy phase wise in different forest patches of the district,” ecologist Vasudha Mishra of HEAL told Mongabay India. HEAL shared on social media that the presence of the rusty-spotted cat had not been detected in previous surveys or in British archival data from the region. “The forests of Purulia, where this remarkable sighting took place, fall within the Chotanagpur Plateau ecoregion, which shares ecological characteristics with Jharkhand and Odisha — both states where the rusty-spotted cat has been previously recorded,” stated the post. Scanning an array of black and white lines to confirm whether it&#8217;s a packet of bread you’ve chosen, or a bag of chips, is done without missing a beat. But instead of scanning to identify a product in a grocery store, what if you could use such a scanning system to identify one of the 1.2 million described species on Earth? Turns out, we may be able to do just that. DNA barcoding can use short genetic sequences from a standardised part of an organism&#8217;s genome to identify a species. It’s somewhat like a genetic fingerprint—unique to each species. Researchers in West Bengal recently used DNA barcoding to document fish biodiversity in the coastal region of the Purba Midnapore district. The study, which also included traditional morphometry-based methods of species identification, revealed ambiguities in the current understanding of species classification in fish. Results from a mixed approach Traditionally, scientists use morphological classification, where body shape, size, structure, patterns, and other physical traits are documented, to identify and classify species. In this study, body length, body shape, fin structure, scale type, and colour patterns of the fishes were used to classify them into 19 species from 17 genera, 12 families, and 6 orders—revealing the rich biodiversity of the coastal areas near the Sunderbans. Banerjee, a birdwatcher, was involved in rescuing animals and also engaged in anti-poaching activities. “Initially, I did not take the call seriously, but my friend, Suvrajyoti Chatterjee, insisted that we go and investigate,” Banerjee said. “We were shocked to find at least 5,000 hunters at the railway station with multiple sacks, each containing over 50 carcasses of monitor lizards. We saw around 2,000 live animals and carcasses lying on the platform. Some people were skinning the animals and were preparing to cook them on the open platform, in full view of the railway staff and the Railway Protection Force (RPF).”  This particular hunt was part of the Phalaharini Kali Pujo festival, a Hindu festival primarily celebrated among Bengali communities. This event was the trigger for Banerjee and Chatterjee to start Human and Environment Alliance League (HEAL) in 2017, a non-profit that aims to curb rampant exploitation of wildlife and empower locals to protect their environments. The cluster of hunting festivals known as ‘Shikar Utsav’ start from January and continue till June. Jharkhali is one of the entry points to the Sundarbans, a biodiversity hotspot considered one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in the country. Recurring cyclones are a harsh reality of the Sundarbans — it experiences five to six cyclones annually. Over the last 40 years, the Bay of Bengal region has experienced 255 cyclonic storms ranging from low to severe categories. Cyclone intensity has increased over the last 100 years. Between 2019 and 2020, three cyclones impacted the Sundarbans, leading to hundreds of casualties and billions in economic damage. The most severe in recent history, Cyclone Amphan in May 2020, reportedly the first category five cyclone to affect the Sundarbans in two decades, had a major impact on India and Bangladesh with a loss of 128 lives and more than $13 million in damage. “When cyclones strike, we barely have time to save our belongings,” Kayal says. 							<![CDATA[In the fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings, the inscription “One Ring to rule them all, One ring to find them, One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them” described the malicious golden one ring that shook the Middle Earth.  But the one ring does not exist in the reality of India’s eroding wetlands, and instead of orcs, humans are responsible for much of the destruction.  Nonetheless, there is hope that rather than a golden one ring, a humble terracotta ring could change the fate of the Sundarbans wetlands by being “A ring to trap the silt and soil, A ring to green them, A ring to bring them all and in the embankments bind them.” Arrangements of large terracotta rings, ranging from two to four feet in diameter and standing at about a foot or two in height, may help save sinking islands in the Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve. These rings, installed in grids measuring 92 metres in length along the embankment, and about 6.5 metres wide along its slope, are silt traps. Over a 16-month period, these silt traps have had some interesting impacts on the embankments as reported in this study that recorded observations of the experiment conducted between 2023 and 2024. The rings have captured and retained sediment, reducing the erosion of the embankment. Fishing cats have been listed as &#8216;Vulnerable&#8217; in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List with their global population declining. Published in December 2024, the study set out to assess the presence of fishing cats outside protected areas in southern West Bengal. “West Bengal can be called as one of the last strongholds of fishing cats in the country. Our study was carried out in various rural and urban wetland areas of southern West Bengal, spanning more than 67,000 square kilometres,” Samrat Chakraborty, the lead investigator of the study, told Mongabay India. The research team set up camera traps in 38 locations spanning ten districts and identified 24 habitats where fishing cats were encountered through camera traps. “Of these 24 locations, 17 were previously not known to harbour fishing cats. All of these 24 locations are outside protected areas. And 60% of these locations are adjacent to human settlements where fishes are cultivated in ponds for consumption, while the remaining 40% are near commercial fish cultivation areas known as bherry.” This proximity to human settlements places them in a highly vulnerable position. An earlier 2022 study, also led by Chakraborty, found retaliatory killing and road accidents to be the major causes of mortality of fishing cats in southern West Bengal, between 2010 and 2021. Renowned as the &#8216;Rongkup Rumkup&#8217; or the &#8216;Beloved People of God,&#8217; the Lepchas maintain a deep-rooted connection with nature, viewing it as a sacred entity. However, with modern environmental and socio-economic challenges, including deforestation and dependency on forest resources, the community and their forests face an urgent need for viable alternatives to balance their cultural traditions with habitat conservation. The Lepchas have long inhabited Kalimpong, a district in the state of West Bengal. They have lived harmoniously with nature for centuries, engaging in traditional agriculture, handicrafts, and using forest resources responsibly. Kalimpong’s rich flora and fauna, along with its favorable climate, support a diverse ecosystem that the Lepchas rely on for sustenance. However, as dependence on natural resources continues to grow, so do the pressures on forest reserves. The cultural landscape is also shifting, with younger generations sometimes finding it challenging to balance traditional practices with modern needs. Tagathang, a small village in Kalimpong, embodies the traditional Lepcha lifestyle, where people live in harmony with nature, following age-old practices alongside modern ones. Nearly 70 years ago, the government gave his family space for fishing and drying the catch at a khoti, a dedicated fish landing centre. Here, fishers gather during the peak fishing season, typically from September to March, to carry out traditional fish processing practices. As part of this allocation, Patra&#8217;s family was also given a portion of land along the shore to build temporary huts and dry fish. These customary rights, vital to their livelihood, have been passed down generations. The khotis are also where small-scale fishing is done, usually by small groups of two or three fishermen who fish within their designated space. After the catch, women sort the fish by quality and sun-dry them. Each khoti is managed by a committee that ensures adherence to fishing regulations, promoting fairness and collective cooperation. This system, common in the Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal, allocates specific areas at sea and onshore to fishing families. When the fishing season begins in September, the grounds are mapped and demarcated, allowing families to claim their designated spaces. By March, the fishing operations end, and families return home. Patra, who is also the secretary of Thanaberiya Matsya Khoti, the hub of fishing activity in the village, has growing concerns about the future of this traditional fishing system.
