							<![CDATA[India’s forests provide annual ecosystem services worth $2.5 trillion, highlights a new study published in Environmental and Sustainability Indicators. Titled Contribution of forest ecosystem services in India using meta-regression approach, the study reveals that the per-hectare value of ecosystem benefits from India’s forests is about $31,000 per year. Among forest types, tropical dry deciduous forests provide the highest economic value at $703 billion, annually. Defined as the direct and indirect benefits that bolster human wellbeing and survival, ecosystem services are further classified into provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting services. With regard to forests, provisioning services include goods obtained from forest lands, such as timber, food and medicinal plants. Regulating services include carbon sequestration and soil protection, while cultural services include recreational benefits and sacred groves, among others. Supporting services include services such as providing habitats for different species. The authors also examined the economic value of individual services and found that India’s forests provide provisioning, regulating and cultural services worth about $9.64, $12.15 and $17.17 billion, respectively, every year. Supporting services were not analysed in the study. A new study published in Nature Communications by researchers from IIT Gandhinagar and Northeastern University, USA examines this paradox. Instead of looking only at air temperature or land surface temperature, the study focused on the Heat Index (HI) which is the “feels like” temperature that combines heat and humidity because humans respond to both temperature and moisture in the air. The study finds that while urban trees generally help cool cities by providing shade, reducing incoming solar radiation, and lowering surface temperatures, these benefits vary in different cities. In humid cities, dense tree canopies can inadvertently increase heat stress by boosting evapotranspiration, which releases more moisture into the air. Where buildings are closely packed and airflow is restricted, this extra humidity can raise the Heat Index even if the air itself becomes cooler. On the other hand, semi-arid cities experience more consistent cooling because the drier atmosphere can absorb additional moisture without becoming uncomfortably humid. The study&#8217;s first author, Angana Borah, says the same tree can produce very different thermal comfort outcomes depending on where it is planted, the surrounding urban density and the local climate. Dal, a culturally and ecologically important lake in Kashmir, has been showing visible symptoms of eutrophication, with runoff from surrounding areas, untreated sewage, and other pollutants adding excess nutrients to the lake and leading to the rapid growth of aquatic plants. While aquatic vegetation can be useful as food, medicine, and fodder, overgrowth disrupts water quality, alters ecohydrology, and threatens native biodiversity. “While the overgrowth of aquatic plants and algae blooms follows a seasonal cycle, the underlying decline in water quality is palpable year-round. We’ve seen the lake struggle under the weight of these excess nutrients, which is exactly why we are focused on repurposing that biomass into something useful for our land,” Kowsar Majid, one of the study authors and a professor in the department of chemistry at National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, told Mongabay-India. The study was published in ACS Sustainable Resource Management journal in March 2026. The findings are a proof of concept, with further studies needed to assess costs, large-scale feasibility and regulatory approval before the approach can be adopted widely. A new study assessing the benefits to biodiversity from NbS in urban areas of the Global South aims to better understand how effectively these interventions address urban challenges. The study, published in Ecological Indicators, found that biodiversity is rarely the primary focus of NbS projects in urban areas. The researchers from the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) and the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) explain in the paper that most projects prioritised societal benefits, such as flood control or heat reduction, over climate mitigation and biodiversity conservation. Ambiguity around nature-based solutions According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), nature-based solutions (NbS) are “actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems” while addressing societal challenges, to deliver human well-being and biodiversity benefits. The term is relatively recent and Western in origin. “The government of India prefers the term ‘ecosystem-based adaptation’, a subset of NbS that engages directly with climate-related challenges,” says corresponding author Jagdish Krishnaswamy, Dean at the School of Environment and Sustainability at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements. Because the term NbS is not widely used in India, many initiatives go underreported, particularly in global research, he adds. COP30 marked the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement of 2015, in which world leaders set the goal of limiting average global temperature rise to well below 2°C and striving for 1.5°C. The Emissions Gap Report 2025, released before COP30, noted that global emissions will most likely rise above 1.5°C in the next decade, and limiting the rise to 2°C will require rapid reductions. A review of recent IPCC assessments — including the AR6 Working Group III report, which evaluates mitigation strategies, and the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, which examines the consequences of exceeding the 1.5°C limit — indicates that pathways to limit warming to 1.5°C now universally depend on the large-scale deployment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR). CDR is now increasingly being featured in climate negotiations, most notably at COP30, where industrial CDR entered the official agenda as part of the strategic objective to accelerate zero and low emission technologies in hard-to-abate sectors. It also gained dedicated spaces for advocacy and coordination. However, it did not enter the final COP30 negotiated text. In the weeks before the conference, the city’s humid air has been thick with anticipation. Banners hang from colonial-era balconies, boats on the Guamá, a tributary of the Amazon River, carry the green and blue COP30 flags, and indigenous delegations arrive by canoe and motor launch. Belém, on the edge of the world’s largest rainforest, is a fitting but uneasy stage. The Amazon, long described as the planet’s lungs, has already lost more than 17% of its forest cover. Its ecosystems are under pressure from mining, agriculture, fire, and encroachment. Holding the world’s most important climate negotiations here is a reminder that the health of forests, oceans, and biodiversity will determine the planet’s stability far more than any paragraph agreed in a negotiation room. The peace march was led by environmentalist and scientist Sonam Wangchuk – a vocal advocate for the application of the sixth schedule in Ladakh, which empowers majority tribal constituencies to formulate their own laws on land use, customs, and development. Ending the march on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary was a deliberate choice. Today, Wangchuk is jailed under one of India’s most stringent anti-terror laws after a hunger strike he led turned violent, and the license to receive foreign funding to his organisation was abruptly cancelled shortly thereafter. Wangchuk had acted in ways that were “prejudicial to the State and detrimental to the maintenance of peace,” the Ladakh administration alleged in a press release. Police opened fire and killed four protestors after a group of unidentified people set the BJP’s office in Leh ablaze on September 24. A few metres into the biodiversity park, smelling of fresh leaves and microbe-rich soil, the mercury drops perceptibly. Birds and butterflies abound. Sunrays dapple the ground and play peekaboo through a canopy of trees native to the Aravalli mountain range. Deep inside the green haven M. Shah Hussain sits in his office. An ecologist, he first came here 20 years ago to survey the area to develop a biodiversity park. “Looking at the green cover and forest sprawl now, it is hard to imagine that this portion of the Aravalli was a degraded wasteland pockmarked with abandoned mining pits two decades ago. There were piles of debris [mining waste] everywhere. The invasive plant vilayati kikar (Prosopis juliflora) had taken over the entire landscape,” says Hussain. Hussain is the scientist-in-charge of ABP and heads a team that has meticulously restored 692 acres (280 hectares, equivalent to 524 football fields) of degraded land into a flourishing forest. The Malayalis – a tribal community inhabiting the Hills – have cultivated various millets for generations. The advent of climate change, however, is making cultivation more challenging, and its impacts haven’t gone unnoticed. India launched its Millet Mission in 2023, with the aim of creating awareness and increasing the production and consumption of millets across the country. States such as Tamil Nadu followed suit, introducing schemes that incorporate millets in public food distribution networks and offering subsidies for processed minor millets. However, these schemes not always suitable for the needs of millet farmers in places like Kolli Hills, said Israel Oliver King E.D., Director of Biodiversity at the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF). “In agro-ecologies where tribal communities are cultivating a diverse bundle of millets, including less popular ones, it needs to be respected and encouraged. With mission-led schemes, there is a risk of homogenisation towards popular varieties,” said King, adding, “The right kind of incentive – either a form of assured procurement for extra millets, or access to processing facilities – can go a long way in ensuring crop diversity and resilience.” Although millets have earned a reputation for being climate resilient, changing weather patterns are adding to the challenges in sowing and harvesting millets. His work was quieter, the slow and unglamorous toil of one man against the arid land. But when he died in early February, aged 75, the forests he left behind spoke for him. The plots in which he worked in the hills of Palakkad, Thrissur, and Malappuram districts in Kerala, once barren and dry, now teem with life—palm and bamboo, tamarind and neem, birds, monkeys, and the occasional wild pig. The green tide spread by his hands, one sapling at a time, stretched over 100 acres of what was once wasteland. Over his lifetime, he planted some 2.5 million trees, turning desolation into forest. The task took decades. The tools were rudimentary: a bamboo staff, a green lungi, and a lifetime of stubborn devotion. Balan had not been born to such work. The son of a toddy tapper, he spent his early years following his father’s trade. His future might have been much the same, had he not encountered the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru, whose words convinced him to renounce liquor and look elsewhere for purpose. He found it in the trees. What began as a simple habit—planting saplings wherever he could—soon became an obsession. He planted by roadsides, in public spaces, across the hills. 							<![CDATA[In the hills of Phek district, nestled within Nagaland&#8217;s verdant landscapes, the ethos of community reverberates through every village. The numerous youth and women societies, and tribal and students’ unions in these villages of the Northeast-Indian state paint a picture of social cohesion. So it made sense that for 51-year-old Seno Tsuhah, a social activist from the Chakhesang tribe, sustainable development always began with initiatives that furthered a community’s well-being. Born in the early 1970s, Seno Tsuhah grew up in Chizami village perched amid the hills of the district, less than 100 kilometres from the capital of Kohima. At the time, an armed conflict was being intensely fought between the Indian government and Naga groups, who have been demanding sovereignty for decades. Tsuhah later became a member of the youth society and the women’s society in her village and was actively involved in various initiatives including women’s health care. Then in 1996, she started engaging with the North East Network (NEN), a regional women&#8217;s rights organisation, through the Chizami Women’s Society. She would go on to spearhead several projects supported by NEN, including starting a seed bank collecting several varieties of Indigenous seeds and Chizami Weaves, an initiative aimed at promoting local weaving and giving women weavers livelihood opportunities. Through these initiatives, Tsuhah and the others eventually realised that to improve the lives of the women in the community, it was essential to focus on ecology and Indigenous resources. The term &#8220;blue carbon&#8221; is an extension of the well-known concept of &#8220;green carbon,&#8221; which refers to the carbon stored by terrestrial ecosystems like forests and grasslands. Coastal marine ecosystems such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows play a crucial role in sequestering carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere and storing it in their biomass (leaves, branches, roots, etc.) and sediments. These ecosystems are remarkably efficient in sequestering carbon, with the oceans playing the role of the largest heat and carbon sinks on the planet. Through photosynthesis, mangroves, salt marsh vegetation, and seagrasses absorb atmospheric CO₂ and store it as sugars and other organic forms of carbon in their biomass. Tides and drainage basins bring in more organic carbon in the form of decaying matter, which is deposited in the sediment, and the falling leaf litter adds to this. These marine ecosystems can store carbon in the sediments for long periods of time, ranging from a few decades to millennia, setting them apart from other terrestrial ecosystems. This is because the near-constant state of inundation and tidal action in these habitats slows down the decomposition of organic matter, effectively locking the carbon away in the sediments. Mangroves are among the most efficient carbon sinks in the world, storing around three to five times more carbon per unit area than tropical rainforests. 							<![CDATA[Women and girls constitute 80% of people displaced by climate change but are consistently missing from important platforms such as the annual Conference of the Parties. Every year there seems to be a new record in the exclusion of women. On November 13, 2024, two days after the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) started in Baku, Women’s Forum of Economy and Society shared on Facebook, a photo of the world leaders present at the conference, with a big question: Where are the women? Out of the 78 world leaders who participated in COP29, only eight were women, which is half as many as last year. “In these forums, 50% of the population are being represented by 10% or less,” shares Meghna Chakkraborty, an independent water professional based in Jabalpur, India. It was this striking lack of women in leadership positions in the climate space that sparked the idea for Chakkraborty, 34, to co-found South Asian Young Women in Water (SAYWiW) in November 2023. While working as a junior rapporteur and speaker at the World Water Week in 2023, she connected with young women from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, all of whom work in water-related fields. They discussed how women are often the most affected by water challenges, but they are also the ones who are closest to solutions. 							<![CDATA[Indian researchers have proposed a theory for a sustainable wastewater treatment method using a microalgae-bacterial consortium to remove toxic ammonium. The method, proposed in a recently published study, leverages algae&#8217;s photosynthesis mechanism to produce oxygen, cutting energy costs by up to 90% compared to traditional aeration methods. This is pertinent given that India’s wastewater situation is critical.  According to a 2022 Niti Aayog report, the India generates approximately 39,604 Million Litres per Day (MLD) of wastewater in rural regions, while in the urban centres, the wastewater generation has been estimated as 72,368 MLD for the year 2020-21. Most of the wastewater in India is generated from agricultural runoff, industrial effluents, and sewage, all of which contain various toxic chemicals. One of the most concerning pollutants in significant quantities is ammonium. Formed from gaseous ammonia, ammonium is a highly toxic nitrogen compound that can exist as nitrate, nitrite, or ammonia. It poses serious risks to living organisms, being lethal to animal cells and harmful to aquatic life. Ammonium can also cause water acidification and contribute to eutrophication, where excessive nutrients in the water lead to harmful algal blooms. “It is crucial to remove ammonium from wastewater to prevent damage to aquatic life and maintain the overall quality of surface and groundwater,” says Kannan Pakshirajan, a professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The 25-km-long river is one of the last habitats for mangrove forests in northern Kerala. A tree-spider crab species, new to science — Leptarma biju, from the genus Leptarma — was described from the Chithari river in 2020. “The Chithari river flows past a large paddy field where I bird regularly,” shares the convenor of the biodiversity management committee, Shyamkumar Puravankara. “We had once found a Taiga flycatcher there but never saw it again,” he says. An architect by profession and an avid birdwatcher, Puravankara is critical of the general approach to managing and conserving riverine habitats. “Citing protection of river banks, what we often see today, is the irrational construction of concrete walls. In the name of cleaning up, we apathetically cut down riverine flora such as kaitha kadukal (Pandanus thickets), which results in river bank erosion,” explains Puravankara. For the natives living in isolated villages, however, daily life in this dramatic landscape involves navigating steep hillsides and torrential rivers beneath dense, rain-soaked subtropical canopies. To ensure safe connectivity, the ancestors of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills learned to guide the aerial roots of the Ficus elastica (Indian rubber fig tree) to build functional architecture. The famous living root bridges, evoking images from the set of the Hollywood blockbuster Avatar, have earned a place on UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage sites. However, Ficus-based living architecture, known as Jingkieng jri in Khasi language, extends far beyond just the bridges. Local residents recommend treks that showcase indigenous craftsmanship using Ficus roots, rarely experienced by outsiders. On one such ancient trail in Pynursla, we climbed the intricately woven living root ladders. On the way, we navigated narrow passages carved along the edge of a hillside, where even the slightest misstep could send us plummeting into the depths below, were it not for the natural railings and retaining walls expertly crafted from Ficus roots. Equipped with only the most basic tools for protection, they undertake the daring task of climbing steep cliffs, smoking giant rock bees into a stupor, and carefully extracting honey from massive beehives, all while ensuring that the brood or hive remains undisturbed. They also employ ingenious methods to prevent revisiting the same hive within the same season. For example, the Kurumbas of the Nilgiris, a hilly district in the southern state of Tamil Nadu,  mark the colonies they have harvested, so other indigenous groups avoid them. This practice is a testament to sustainable harvesting and a deep understanding of their place in the ecosystem. “The Kurumbas are angry,” my former colleague, who works closely with tribal groups in the Nilgiris, informs me. I was inquiring about interviewing Kurumba elders for an article on indigenous knowledge, specifically about the giant rock bee, Apis dorsata. The Kurumbas&#8217; frustration stems from the repeated documentation of their honey hunting skills and romanticising of it. “What have we gained in return?” they ask. “We are still in poverty.” Tribal elders have a vast knowledge of wild food plants that remain untapped. 							<![CDATA[In the pilgrimage town of Tarapith in West Bengal, an initiative is transforming pollution into prosperity. Known for its 13th-century Ma Tara temple, Tarapith attracts around 12,000 devotees daily. The offerings of flowers, that are later discarded into the nearby Dwarka river, have long contributed to pollution and environmental degradation. However, this trend is changing thanks to a collaborative effort between the Mallarpur Naisuva Trust and the temple committee, who have launched a project to recycle these flowers into valuable compost and other products. “We noticed pollution in Tarapith. Everyone used to dump used flowers, leaves etc. in the nearby river. One of the members and well-wishers, Bidhan Roy suggested we take up a solid waste management project. It would not only clean the temple area but also help the farmers with the vermicompost,” said Sadhan Sinha, Secretary of the Mallarpur Naisuva Trust. The recycling process begins at the temple, where used flowers are collected in vats and transported to a production unit in Gowala village. There, they are carefully segregated from other materials mixed in them, before being soaked in a mixture of flour and jaggery. Over 35 days, the flowers decompose, after which cow dung and earthworms are added to facilitate further decomposition. This results in vermicompost, a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer. The project not only helps to clean the environment but also supports the livelihoods of local farmers by providing them with high-quality compost. A rainfall deficit of 37 percent forced the Kerala government to declare Wayanad district drought-hit. “We don&#8217;t have data, but I&#8217;m certain we lost 70% of our crops that year,” says Krishnan. While the damage was significant for all farmers, Krishnan recalls that the emotional toll was particularly heavy on young farmers like him who were new to farming. A former Greenpeace-campaigner-turned-farmer, he had moved to Wayanad from Bengaluru only a few years earlier. “The drought was severe, but the traditional farmers of Wayanad seemed better equipped to face it,” he shares. Rajesh Krishnan, one of the founders of a Wayanad-based farmer-producer organisation that worked on the agricultural calendar. Invaluable advice he received from an Adiya tribal farmer, Bolan, stood Krishnan in good stead during those gruelling drought years. A recent study delves into the potential of the species’ revival and provides a crucial strategy for reintroducing the wild water buffalo in Kanha Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh. While the northeastern population of the animal remains robust, the central Indian population has dwindled to a mere 30-35 individuals. The once prominent population in Udanti-Sitanadi National Park, Chhattisgarh, now consists of only six bulls and no cows, raising significant concerns.
