							<![CDATA[A new catfish species, Pseudecheneis likimroensis, has been described from India&#8217;s north-eastern state of Nagaland. The species, named after the fast-flowing Likimro river, from which specimens have been collected so far, was described in the Journal of Ichthyology. The discovery took place unexpectedly when a research team was in the region to survey fish fauna in Nagaland’s Kiphire district, said Limatemjen, co-author of the paper on the new species. Kiphire is a remote district, situated in the eastern part of the state and lies along the India-Myanmar border. “First we had to travel from Kohima to Kiphire, covering a distance of around 100 km. However, the journey takes much longer due to difficult road conditions,” Limatemjen, a professor of Zoology and Dean of Sciences at Kohima Science College, told Mongabay-India. After reaching Kiphire, the team took another four-hour journey to Likimro river where they walked yet another hour to reach the designated sampling site. Characteristic of mountain streams, the sampling site is torrential in nature and is surrounded by steep valleys. Around five specimens of Pseudecheneis likimroensis were collected by the team during the survey in October 2024. Although initially surprised by the unusual catch, found at an elevation of 446 m above sea level, it was only after bringing the specimens to the laboratory and running detailed examinations did the team realise they had an undescribed species at hand. 							<![CDATA[“We look after our forests, we save them, because they are our home,” Gaura Devi of the Chipko movement fame had once said. “We get fuel, fodder and some food from the forest, we get herbs when someone falls ill, but we don’t have any [legal] paper to save us if the forest department refuses to let us in or complains to the police that we are stealing.” This is the problem the Global Environment Facility (GEF) aims to solve with its Conservation of Biodiversity, its Sustainable Use, Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits in India (CONSERVE) project in three states — Uttarakhand, Nagaland and Tripura. The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) will carry out the project that was approved at the May 30-June 6 GEF assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. GEF will give a $12.38 million grant for the project; the World Bank will lend $30 million. Speaking to Mongabay-India on the sidelines of the assembly, Benjamin Singer, senior biodiversity specialist, Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) and the GEF official looking after the project, said, “Community-managed forests have to be safeguarded. Communities around the world are doing it and have always done it. We want to design this better in full consultation with the communities themselves. Conceptualised by the Eastern Himalayas Marbled Cat Project (EHMCP), in collaboration with state forest departments, the Day focused on engaging local communities and creating spaces for shared learning. “This timing was chosen deliberately,” says Giridhar Malla, conservationist and founder of the EHMCP. “It marks a seasonal transition. When forests begin to shift with the onset of spring, there is renewed growth, and communities also start preparing for sowing. We saw this as a meaningful moment for people to reflect on ecological change and connect that sense of renewal with the importance of remembering and conserving the marbled cat across Northeast India.” Community-led conservation Following a camera-trap survey conducted between 2022 and 2025 by the EHMCP, which confirmed the scattered presence of the marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata) in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Meghalaya, residents of the villages where the species was captured on camera decided to take up conservation measures. These villages include Lokpeng in Siang district and Nyorok in West Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh; Riangmaw in West Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya; and Khonoma in Kohima district and Choklangan in Noklak district in Nagaland. 							<![CDATA[In Nagaland’s Kiphire district, along the porous Indo-Myanmar border, pangolins have been hunted for decades — once due to cultural beliefs, and increasingly for trade, in a region identified as a key wildlife trafficking route. “Our forefathers would say that if a pangolin enters a house, it was considered a bad omen or curse,” says L. Kipitong Sangtam, 61, a resident of Amahator village in Kiphire district. “In the past, if someone encountered a pangolin, they would try to catch and kill it, sometimes by digging it out of its burrow.” Now, conservationists in Nagaland are turning to village councils and customary courts, to protect the elusive mammal. Though pangolin hunting is banned under India’s Wildlife Protection Act, enforcement remains difficult. So, conservationists are working with local tribal bodies, that have a greater influence in the state, to push for a local ban and safeguard the species. Earlier this year, the United Sangtam Likhum Pumji (USLP), the apex tribal body of the Sangtam Naga community, passed a resolution for a community-led ban on pangolin hunting in 42 villages of Kiphire district. The Sangtam Naga community is a major ethnic group in Nagaland, primarily inhabiting the Kiphire and Tuensang districts. 							<![CDATA[Jhum farming plays an integral role in subsistence agriculture across the Northeastern region of India. Traditionally, jhum cultivation involved long fallow periods of 10–20 years. In recent times, however, these cycles have shortened and adapted to contemporary farming lifestyles due to increasing population pressures. As a result, the efficacy of jhum farming and shifting cultivation has become a point of concern among scientific and environmental groups, particularly in the context of climate change and deforestation. Despite this debate, jhum farming offers several ecological benefits. It is considered carbon neutral, as carbon is sequestered during field preparation, while also helping to maintain the hydrological characteristics of the landscape, reduce soil erosion, and enhance soil organic carbon and nutrient levels. Farmers in Khonoma village in Nagaland have long recognised these advantages and have responded by integrating jhum farming with the pollarding of alder trees. Pollarding — a method of planting and pruning trees — has historically been practised across Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Northeastern regions of India. Research has highlighted the benefits of alder-based jhum systems, particularly the tree’s ability to retain soil nutrients and fix nitrogen. However, this age-old practice is rapidly changing, and posing an increasing threat to wildlife. A recent study conducted across two ecologically rich forest areas in Nagaland &#8212;  Khelia Community Forest and Intangki National Park, reveals the troubling extent of wildlife hunting and trade in the region. Camera traps in both forests, which are part of the ecologically critical Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot, captured 31 species of wild animals, all of which are being hunted or consumed. This raises urgent questions about conservation, community roles, and the future of biodiversity in this area. Satem Longchar, a conservation ecologist and lead author of the study, recalls one of her first encounters with illegal wildlife trade. “In 2012–13, while conducting fieldwork near Nagaland’s only national park &#8211; Intangki, I met a young hunter, around 20 years old. I was showing him photos of various wild cats when he excitedly claimed to own a tiger skin. What he brought out was the pelt of a clouded leopard. 							<![CDATA[In August 2024, when sheets of rain came pouring down on Kohima, Nagaland’s capital city, the retaining wall surrounding 70-year-old Vejopra Dozo’s home collapsed due to a landslide. “It was an especially bad bout of rain, and we even lost 40 to 50 bags of rice worth ₹60,000, which were all washed away,&#8221; he told Mongabay India over the phone. In May 2025, a sum of ₹25,000 was deposited in Dozo’s bank account, after he paid a visit to the District Disaster Management Authority. Unlike in the past, this compensation came not from traditional government funds, but from insurance. In the time it took for Dozo to be compensated, the Nagaland government was adding its finishing touches to a new extreme-weather insurance scheme which enabled the payout. Called the Disaster Risk Transfer Parametric Insurance Solution (DRTPS), the scheme is the first of its kind in the country, which insures the entire state against heavy rainfall. The scheme was relaunched last year after making revisions to its design. So far, payouts worth ₹1.06 crore have been made to residents impacted by heavy rain and other hazards. Kohima city. This finding, the researchers claim, could significantly boost polyhouse farming in the country. The study found that the stingless bee species — Tetragonula iridipennis Smith and Lepidotrigona arcifera Cockerell — when introduced under greenhouse conditions, were able to pollinate around 10 crops, including chilli, cucumber, watermelon, and squash varieties such as pumpkin. Avinash Chauhan, scientist and principal investigator (AICRP Honeybees &amp; Pollinators), Department of Entomology, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, confirms the details: “Stingless bees have a limited range of 50 to 100 metres and can withstand temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius. In contrast, the rock bee, Apis dorsata, which is an important pollinator in open conditions, on the other hand, has a much wider range and cannot be confined within a polyhouse,” he points out. Other qualities that make stingless bees ideal for pollination in confined spaces are their floral fidelity and stingless nature. “These bees return to the same flower until they fully exploit the nectar; this fidelity to flowers qualifies them as excellent pollinators. The numerous youth and women societies, and tribal and students’ unions in these villages of the Northeast-Indian state paint a picture of social cohesion. So it made sense that for 51-year-old Seno Tsuhah, a social activist from the Chakhesang tribe, sustainable development always began with initiatives that furthered a community’s well-being. Born in the early 1970s, Seno Tsuhah grew up in Chizami village perched amid the hills of the district, less than 100 kilometres from the capital of Kohima. At the time, an armed conflict was being intensely fought between the Indian government and Naga groups, who have been demanding sovereignty for decades. Tsuhah later became a member of the youth society and the women’s society in her village and was actively involved in various initiatives including women’s health care. Then in 1996, she started engaging with the North East Network (NEN), a regional women&#8217;s rights organisation, through the Chizami Women’s Society. She would go on to spearhead several projects supported by NEN, including starting a seed bank collecting several varieties of Indigenous seeds and Chizami Weaves, an initiative aimed at promoting local weaving and giving women weavers livelihood opportunities. Through these initiatives, Tsuhah and the others eventually realised that to improve the lives of the women in the community, it was essential to focus on ecology and Indigenous resources. 							<![CDATA[In recent times, both at national and international levels, there has been strong recognition of the role of local and indigenous communities in securing global biodiversity and the need for mechanisms to support them. Among all the international initiatives, the most significant ones are the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), aimed at conserving global biodiversity and first signed at the Earth Summit held in Brazil in 1992, and the targets of the biannual Conference of Parties (COP) to the CBD. In November 2018, the biodiversity conference COP14 adopted the category ‘other effective area-based conservation measures’ (OECMs) to incorporate all conservation efforts of local and indigenous communities. At COP10, held in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010, parties agreed, as part of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, to secure (through effective conservation and sustainable management) 17 percent of territorial and inland water bodies between 2010 and 2020. The Protected Planet Report 2020 submitted to CBD noted that countries secured nearly 16.64 percent and the contribution of OECMs was seven percent. In the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2019 submitted to CBD, India has reported that it secured nearly 28 percent of the total area (0.93 million sq. km), which is much above the target. What is important to note is that the contribution of OECM to India’s achievement was around 17 percent (0.16 million sq. km). The protestors plan to continue their hunger strike, after a new government is formed in early June, with the goal of bringing attention to their demand for legislation to protect Ladakh’s environment and culture. Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who is leading the protests, told Mongabay-India, &#8220;We hope not, but if needed, I will embark on another 21-day fast alongside thousands of youths to advocate for safeguards for nature and culture under the Sixth Schedule.&#8221; Wangchuk began this 21-day hunger strike on March 6, terming it a “climate fast”. Since then, several others have joined in the protest. Wangchuk says the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised to bring the union territory of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule, twice. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP listed implementation of the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh as one of its top three priorities in its manifesto for Ladakh. The same promise was made ahead of the 2020 local elections for the Hill Development Council in Ladakh, which was won by the BJP. “People supported them based on this (promise of Sixth Schedule provisions in Ladakh), and they were able to form a government. Rainfed agriculture accounts for around 40% of the country&#8217;s total food grain production and supports two-thirds of livestock and 40% of the human population. Hence, it is a crucial contributor to the country’s economy and food security. The livelihoods of 80% of small and marginal farmers are linked to rain. According to the NRAA, rainfed areas in India are the most variable and unpredictable environments which renders rain-dependent agriculture a risky proposition. “Yet, there is enough evidence to show that traditionally, rural communities knew how to harness this variability to support their economies, societies and agro-ecosystems, carefully breeding livestock and varieties of crops that can thrive in these areas,” it states in a policy document. Kikruma, a village in Nagaland stands as a precedent for this statement. The indigenous system of irrigation and agricultural practice in this region, called the Ruza system, more popularly known as Zabo, is a time-tested unique water management practice that has been yielding good harvests for nearly a century. 							<![CDATA[Just days before the Lok Sabha passed the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Bill, 2023 — with little heed paid to the genuine concerns raised about its provisions by ecologists, bureaucrats, tribal communities, and citizens at large — I was in the Nilgiris. The verdant, green, tree-flecked hills lay spread out in front of me, touched by the golden rays of the setting sun. At first glance, everything looked like a picture of sylvan perfection. But I only had to scratch the idyllic surface to see that the relict montane shola forests and their surrounding grasslands were being engulfed by plantations of black wattle and eucalyptus, tea gardens and thickets of invasive species. While gazing at the threatened natural forest and grassland ecosystems, I was struck by the incongruity of a forest bill that dilutes forest conservation while actively promoting compensatory afforestation, or tree plantations, as forest replacements. The irony was also not lost on me that it was mining in the Nilgiris that had prompted the pivotal Godavarman Supreme Court judgement of 1996, providing umbrella protection to forests, irrespective of their exact provenance.  The passage of the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act of 2023 is now set to dramatically rework the landscape of forest conservation in India, built upon more than four decades of painstaking legal and policy efforts. The amendment alters the landmark Forest (Conservation) Act of 1980 (FCA), which attempted to put the brakes on widespread deforestation by states following independence. Her experiences with the local communities challenged common wisdom &#8211; shifting cultivation or jhum had not “stagnated” and traditional, non-intensively farmed jhum landscapes in Nagaland in northeast India sustained significant levels of carbon stocks and bird diversity. Borah, currently a senior wildlife biologist with the Government of Alberta, Canada says “farmers are constantly improving the system” to address land scarcity and declining crop yields. 							<![CDATA[The Tokhü Emong Bird Count (TEBC) is a citizen science initiative with an aim to celebrate the birds of the state of Nagaland. The event has been hailed as Nagaland&#8217;s first bird documentation event by Bird Count India, a bird monitoring and documentation collective and one of the organising groups. Other organisers include the Wokha Forest Division and the Divisional Management Unit, Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP). The event took place over four days from November 4 to 7, 2022, and involved 18 e-birders from four districts of Nagaland &#8211; Dimapur, Kohima, Peren, and Wokha. The e-birders were able to identify 178 species of birds. The TEBC was the brainchild of Lansothung Lotha, a district forest ranger with the Nagaland Forest Department and an avid conservationist. Lotha discussed the process of the TEBC with Mongabay-India, stating that participants were primarily students invited from schools. The aim was to help nurture a love for birding and conservation amongst young participants. The organisers conducted workshops on birding and taught participants how to use and upload their data on eBird, the online bird observation database created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The preliminary report of the TEBC event released by Bird Count India details a day-to-day summary of the event and includes a list of the birds that were recorded by the participants. 							<![CDATA[Famed for its tea, Assam’s tea garden records are giving scientists a glimpse into past rainfall changes in northeast India, plagued by scattered and spotty historical rainfall data. For 12 years, the scientists and students at Cotton University in Guwahati, Assam, combed through handwritten tea garden records spanning 1920 to 2009, to reconstruct a 90-year daily rainfall dataset. The reconstructed dataset aims to fill in the gaps in historical rainfall observation network by the India Meteorological Department and generate a new baseline for rainfall in the northeast. This will help analyse and address the impacts and risks due to extreme rainfall, in improved ways. Using the data mined, they were able to identify and highlight the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall in northeast India through the past century, while the average rainfall has decreased. “The rain comes in short spells; the spells are no longer well distributed in space and time like they used to be 30-40 years ago,” Rahul Mahanta, who led the reconstruction, told Mongabay-India during a visit to the University just days before the Assam floods disrupted life, in June 2022. For Tokugha Sumi, a school headmaster, a village council member and the son of the headman of Sapotami village in Nagaland, it was the loss of bird sounds and the disappearance of various animals like monkeys, gibbons and hornbills from the forests. While Tokugha’s father and forefathers would rely on bird calls to predict the arrival of rain, wind and sun, newer generations had to abandon this practice. This is due to the dwindling number of birds around the village, and also because the sounds no longer correspond to changes in the weather. “They give the wrong signals,” Tokugha explains. “This is an ecological imbalance. We created this.” Such observations led Tokugha Sumi, part of the Sumi tribe, to take up an interest in conservation. Identified as being among the richest zones of biodiversity in the world, Nagaland’s natural surroundings have been protected by its people by adhering to certain rules that date back centuries. These include the demarcation of areas to be used for extracting firewood and timber, as well as periodic restrictions on hunting and fishing. Certain forests and water bodies also used to be considered sacred, thereby limiting human interference. “Our forefathers did a great job of preserving the land for us,” Tokugha admits, “but now we cannot preserve it for our children. 							<![CDATA[When Sowete-ü K. Letro was growing up in Dimapur, a town in the northeast Indian state of Nagaland, she had a habit of collecting things. The 27-year-old Letro recalls how she was obsessed with not throwing away any of her things including electronic waste (e-waste). Even when a few items would become useless, she would fondly keep them with herself believing she might use them again in the future. “I have been a hoarder all my life,” Letro said. She is now channelising those habits into doing her bit to protect the environment. Letro and her school friend Bendangwala Walling have set up Nagaland’s first e-waste collection centre ‘e-Circle’. The duo were also roommates during their university days in Punjab where they both used to bond over their shared love for the environment and Nagaland, their native state. At the university, Letro studied human rights and duties while Walling completed a master’s degree in social work. Letro did her dissertation on plastic waste management in Chandigarh city and that was when she was introduced to the waste management system. “It was very interesting to learn how this is part of our daily life and how crucial it is for us to manage it,” Letro told Mongabay-India. Their journey started from there. Both of them then went on to do their summer internship in Shillong with an international company that deals with solid and municipal waste. “We always wanted to do something together,” Walling said. 							<![CDATA[From “shooting with catapults and guns” to “shooting with cameras”, church worker Nuklu Phom mobilised communities in his ancestral village Yaongyimchen, in mountainous Nagaland, to identify an area for conservation in community-owned forests, over a decade ago. Under Phom’s leadership communities worked together to do away with hunting, protect biodiversity and adopt sustainable livelihoods centred around the 10 square km Yaongyimchen Community Biodiversity Conservation Area (YCBCA) set aside by them for conservation. Their efforts over time led to the revival of dwindling wildlife, including an increase in congregations of the long-distance migratory bird, the Amur falcon, the conservation initiative’s flagship species. Amur falcon is a small grey bird that annually migrates over 30,000 km from Siberia, China and Mongolia onto the southern parts of Africa. People had taken to hunting the birds and selling their meat during the birds’ stopover in Nagaland. By documenting the significant increase in numbers of roosting Amur falcons over time in YCBCA, Phom was able to demonstrate the comeback of wildlife and restoration of ecosystems following a hunting ban and environmental-friendly farming. Phom was recently honoured with the Whitley Award, in recognition of his nature conservation efforts. The 80-90 sq km (around 20,000 acres) valley, which lies in the border region of Nagaland and Manipur, has been susceptible to forest fire since the early 2000s, and this time, since December 29, when the fire was reportedly seen, 200 acres alone were reduced to ashes. Located at an altitude of 2452 m above sea level, behind Nagaland’s Japfu Peak in northeast India, its biodiverse and rich landscape has been in the media headlines quite often for tourism and allied adventures like trekking. Dzukou means the ‘valley of cold water’ in the Mao language.
