Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), dhole (Cuon alpinus), king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), gaur (Bos gaurus), sloth bear (Melursus ursinus), Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata), great hornbill (Buceros bicornis), tiger (Pathera tigris) and the leopard (Panthera pardus) make up the anchor species. Habitat protection of at least any one of these nine key species could help conserve more than 700 vertebrates and around 1.1 gigatonnes of carbon (above-ground) across India, notes the study. “Biodiversity is often an afterthought in carbon markets. It’s always carbon first, biodiversity second,” says co-author Aakash Lamba, pointing at how existing frameworks like Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards frame biodiversity as an added benefit of carbon-financed climate projects, rather than considering biodiversity as central to climate mitigation. A conservation scientist at the Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions at the National University of Singapore, Lamba emphasises on a species-centred conservation model. The idea is simple: the more you conserve forests, which in this case are the habitats of nine anchor species, the higher the conservation of natural carbon stocks. For each species, researchers measured two things — first, how many other vertebrate species co-occurred in its habitat and second, how much above-ground carbon was stored within that habitat. Every year, thousands of safari vehicles enter India&#8217;s protected forests, generating revenue for conservation and local communities. But a recent study suggests that this growing human footprint may also come at a physiological cost for the country’s national animal, and may even influence where female tigers establish breeding areas. “Wildlife tourism is growing rapidly around our protected areas. It funds conservation, but more people also means more stress for the animals,” says Govindhaswamy Umapathy, chief scientist at the Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species, CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, and the study’s corresponding author. “Earlier Indian studies looked at just one or two reserves and focused on stress. We wanted the full picture across the country, not only where tigers are stressed, but where tigresses choose to breed,” he adds. However, industry experts also caution against treating tourism as a bigger threat than habitat loss or large-scale development pressures. Tracking stress without disturbing tigers The study was conducted between November 2020 and February 2023, in five tiger reserves: Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand, Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, Kanha Tiger Reserve and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, and Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala. It is also densely populated, with over 400 villages located across the region. Though 97 tigers were recorded in this corridor, human-animal coexistence has become a renewed challenge. According to a news report published last August, more than 14,000 cattle were killed by tigers and leopards across the state in 2024–2025. In such situations, it is easy to overlook the role played by herders. They possess specialised knowledge that helps people coexist with tigers. They serve to locate livestock killed by predators and navigate government compensation systems. Cattle deaths can easily escalate tensions between forest-dwelling cattle holders and the forest department, the main agency dispensing the compensation. Herders don’t just address human-wildlife conflict, they mediate such difficult relations in the best interests of coexistence. One would most likely presume that in such times of peak conflict, the herder should be more indispensable than ever. Instead, herders are quitting their occupation due to economic, ecological, and social pressures. As herding and its associated knowledge disappears, it may undermine forms of coexistence that conservation programmes rarely account for. As he walks up a hill rising above the forest canopy, he points to a spot on the road. “It’s over here. When I saw the tiger, it was 9 a.m.,” he says. “I was really shocked… I couldn’t tell if the tiger was coming towards me.” In 2007, just six years after this fleeting encounter, Cambodia’s last confirmed tiger sighting was logged by a camera trap. In the 1990s, the country was estimated to host hundreds of wild Indochinese tigers, but decades of poaching pressure took a heavy toll. In 2016, tigers (Panthera tigris) were formally declared extinct in Cambodia. That may be set to change with the imminent translocation of a small population of Bengal tigers from India. While carnivore reintroduction has been considered as an important strategy to restore ecological balance, a recent study highlights that prey abundance and habitat quality also play an essential role. “Focusing exclusively on the apex predator (for ecosystem recovery) tells only a fraction of the story. The answer lies in the broader mammalian community that supports them,” says Supratim Dutta, research scholar at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and one of the authors of the study. “The real question is not whether tigers came back, but what made that recovery possible.” A landscape built on extremes Panna Tiger Reserve spans 1,574 square kilometres across Madhya Pradesh, with 542 sq km of core and a larger buffer zone. The terrain is rugged, cut through by the Ken River, the only perennial water source. Summers can touch 45°C, and winters drop to around 5°C. Vegetation is largely a tropical dry deciduous forest. The reserve supports a dense mammal community. Tigers and leopards are apex predators. Below them in the chain are wolves, jackals and hyenas. Prey includes chital, sambar, nilgai and wild pig. Around 30,000 people live in settlements in the buffer zone. But the surrounding landscapes are no longer as conducive. Once continuous forest blocks are now fragmented by farms, roads, rail lines, and settlements. A recent study published in the Journal for Nature Conservation examines how tigers navigate such altered terrain. The study was conducted by researchers from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing and the Institute of Integrated Learning in Management (IILM) University. “Many studies talk about habitat loss. Our focus is on building computational models that use data to understand [habitat] connectivity,” says Saurabh Shanu, Assistant Dean and an associate professor at IILM University, and one of the study’s co-authors. The goal was to identify which parts of the landscape still allow safe passage for tigers, and which are at risk of being lost. To achieve this, the researchers combined satellite data with two analytical approaches — graph theory and game theory. “Graph theory helps us connect different places on the map. Game theory helps us understand how a tiger responds to things like prey, roads, or other animals,” Shanu explains. Nagpur-based Sunflag Iron and Steel Company Ltd was allotted almost 36 hectares of forested land under the Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2015. News reports suggest that an estimated 18,000 trees would be felled to make way for the project. While Mongabay-India couldn’t access the documents to verify the number of trees to be felled, a 2022 tree enumeration survey report  available publicly points to over 11,773 trees to be cut and experts suggest that more trees have likely been added to this number in the last few years. What truly concerns residents is the environmental cost of the project, including a potential rise in negative interactions with tigers. 							<![CDATA[The first photographic evidence of the Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris) was recently recorded in Dibru Saikhowa National Park and Biosphere Reserve in Assam. The region had tigers in the 1990s, but there has been no documented evidence to establish the status of the tiger population. Small camera trapping exercises in earlier years did not bear fruit until recently, when around 60 cameras were installed and a tiger’s presence was successfully documented. The Dibru Saikhowa National Park and Biosphere Reserve comes under the Tinsukia Wildlife Division. In 1997, the biosphere reserve, with an area of 765 square kilometres, was declared. Then, in 1999, its core area of 340 sq km was declared a national park. “Since the inception of the national park, this is the first time a tiger has been caught on camera in Dibru Saikhowa,” Bibison Tokbi, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Tinsukia Wildlife Division, tells Mongabay-India. “We captured the tiger twice on camera trap, first on December 14, 2025, and then on January 1, 2026. Both the images were of the same tiger.” He adds that the staff have recently discovered some pug marks of another tiger as well, indicating the presence of multiple big cats. There was no official report of conflict as well as no records of carcass recovery or poaching incidents. This indicated that she had not died within the reserve. However, for nearly three years, there was no photographic trace of her anywhere in the official monitoring grids of Madhya Pradesh. Then, in 2021, camera traps in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve (ATR) in the neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh captured a tigress moving through the sal forest with cubs trailing behind her. The stripe pattern verification confirmed what the field staff suspected. She was the same tigress. She had crossed over from Madhya Pradesh to Chhattisgarh &#8211; nearly 400 kilometres. Forest officials later named her Jhumri. In official monitoring records, she was catalogued as TK-8. Experts say that when she disappeared from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, she had reached dispersal age, a stage in a tiger’s life, usually between two and three years old, when remaining in the natal territory is no longer possible. Bandhavgarh is one of India’s most densely populated tiger reserves. In such landscapes, ecological success creates pressure. When prey density is high and breeding females are established, cub survival increases. But territory is finite. Adult males hold defined ranges that overlap with resident females. Sub-adults, once independent, are gradually pushed outward, said Samir Kumar Sinha, head of conservation at the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). Most studies so far have relied on scat analysis to understand tiger diets. The method involves washing scats, extracting undigested remains such as hair or bone fragments, and identifying prey species under a microscope. While widely used, this approach has important limitations. It can miss prey species with soft tissues, overlook rare prey, and misidentify species whose hair looks similar. Results can also vary depending on observer experience. A new study from Ranthambore Tiger Reserve (RTR) in Rajasthan now tests whether DNA metabarcoding, a molecular technique that extracts and identifies prey DNA directly from scat, can overcome these limitations and offer a clearer picture of what tigers are actually eating. “By directly comparing the two methods, we aimed to assess differences in prey detection, diversity, and taxonomic resolution (identifying species accurately). Specifically, we wanted to understand whether metabarcoding could provide a more comprehensive and less-biased picture of tiger diet, especially by detecting rarer or overlooked prey,” says Sarang Mishrikotkar, wildlife biologist, National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), and co-author of the study. Studying tiger diet in Ranthambore Between December 2019 and February 2020, the researchers carried out field surveys across RTR, repeatedly sampling along the reserve’s forest road network. Together, these samples showed the hidden microbes living inside the cats — their gut microbiome. The researchers compared the gut bacteria of Bengal tigers across the multiple Indian reserves. In their new study, published in Global Ecology and Conservation, they explored whether human activities in tiger habitats leaves measurable traces inside the animals. Habitats and seasons can influence the bacterial community structures in the tiger, with potential implications for its health, the study found. “Tigers in buffer zones experience more human and livestock presence compared to those in the core areas. We wanted to see if this difference is reflected in their gut microbes,” said Govindhaswamy Umapathy, chief scientist at the Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) and principal investigator of the study. In villages surrounding the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, gram sabha meetings are being held one after another, and one question echoes through them all — will we have to leave the villages where our families have lived for generations, deep inside these forests? Residents of 17 village panchayats claim that over the past few months, officials from the Forest Department have been conducting surveys, showing maps, measuring fields, and marking land. They are concerned that these actions may be the first steps in a plan to relocate entire settlements for tiger conservation. The Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve is one of the oldest protected areas in Chhattisgarh. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984, but tensions began in 2004 when it was proposed as a tiger reserve. Since then, the Forest Department and local Indigenous communities have often been at odds. Arjun Singh Nayak, president of the Gram Sabha Federation of the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, said that forest officials began restricting their traditional rights, especially their collection of minor forest produce. Forest guards falsely accused several tribal women of illegally collecting wood from the core area and even filed criminal cases against them, he claimed. An environment impact assessment notes that there is a presence of tigers, leopards, and other animals along the track corridor. The assessment was carried out by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), commissioned by the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), the implementing public sector entity for the Indian Railways. “Adult tigers with cubs were (camera) captured in 5 locations”; “common leopards in multiple locations”, “sloth bears with cubs in numerous places”; besides “significant captures” of wild herbivores like gaur, sambhar, mouse deer, northern red muntjac or barking deer and wild boar, the assessment states. The current single railway line runs for 345 km from Hospet in Karnataka to Vasco da Gama in Goa. The proposed double line is to open up a coal transport corridor between these two areas. About 26 km of this line, will run from Castlerock on Karnataka’s border to Kulem on the Goa border. Maintaining “connectivity”, the natural pathways that allow animals to move between habitats, is therefore critical. At the same time, a new study shows that large carnivores don’t all respond the same way to fragmented landscapes. “Conservation planning in India has been centred on tigers, with corridors and mitigation measures largely designed around their ecology and movement patterns. While this has yielded important gains, it overlooks the fact that other sympatric species (species that live in the same geographic area), such as leopards and dholes, have very different ecological requirements,” says Shrushti Modi, a scientist at the Department of Animal Ecology and Conservation Biology at Wildlife Institute of India, and co-author of the study. A new, long-term study from Maharashtra’s Eastern Vidarbha Landscape (EVL) offers rare insights into that journey. By tracking young tigers as they leave their natal territories, disperse through risky terrain, and finally settle down, researchers have mapped how the big cats adapt to, and struggle with, living alongside people. “We deliberately chose subadult tigers of 1.5-2.5 years, which were on the cusp of leaving their mother’s territory. By following them across three stages — pre-dispersal, dispersal, and post-dispersal — we could capture their full journey, from comfort zone to independence,” says Pallavi Ghaskadbi, a wildlife biologist and postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå, and one of the study’s researchers. In search of new homes The East Vidarbha Landscape or EVL, part of the central Indian tiger landscape, is a patchwork of reserves, sanctuaries, and forest divisions interspersed with agricultural fields, highways, and more than 8,500 villages. Its forested areas include the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. “The EVL makes up about 30% of Maharashtra’s area and is home to 20% of its people; yet it also supports an estimated 300-500 tigers. In Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, one such case is now raising difficult questions. A male tiger popularly known as Chhota Matka, once a dominant force in his landscape, was spotted with a severe leg injury infested with maggots. The administration captured the tiger on August 27 and shifted it to the Treatment Transit Centre in Chandrapur for specialised care, after the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court took a suo motu cognisance of the situation. The situation reopens a larger debate that conservationists have long grappled with: should humans intervene to treat an injured wild tiger, or allow nature to take its course? At first glance, the compassionate answer seems obvious. If an animal is suffering, surely we must help it. Just as a farmer would treat a cow with a festering wound, or a family would rush a dog to a veterinarian, many feel it is only humane to extend the same care to wildlife. Yet, wild tigers are not cattle or pets. Their very survival depends on being untamed, free, and independent of human crutches. Every decision to intervene carries ecological, ethical, and philosophical consequences that ripple far beyond the individual animal. In 2024, India recorded 126 tiger deaths against an estimated adult tiger population of 3,700. The land in question lies in Survey No. 147/2 at Theralu village in Virajpet taluk. This parcel of the revenue land borders the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, where the Barapole river originates. It has been handed over to the Karmika Kalyana Ilake, or the Labour Welfare Department. The decision to allocate the land was taken in 2017 by the then Deputy Commissioner, B.C. Satish, to resettle 100 landless tribal families belonging to the Kuruba and Yerava communities, most of whom were evicted from the Diddahalli forest in 2016. The process has gained momentum following a recent push from Kodagu MLA A.S. Ponnanna. Forest officials stationed near the site informed Mongabay India that they stopped a group of people from initiating land conversion work in June. 							<![CDATA[Slain livestock can now point to the tiger that killed them. A recent study used traces of DNA from livestock kills to individually identify tigers in the forests of Central India. It finds that many tigers prey on cattle, contrary to the prevalent notion that a few problem predators are involved. The research, which used genetic tools to identify tigers responsible for livestock kills, was a collaborative effort between scientists and the forest department. The researchers, with help from the forest department, collected samples carrying trace amounts of predator DNA from close to 200 livestock kills in Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves. Genetic markers were used to successfully detect the presence of a tiger at all kill sites and were also instrumental in individually identifying tigers in 85% of them. The results show that a large proportion of the tiger population may be involved in preying on livestock, which has important implications for managing human-tiger conflict. People and predators at crossroads A rise in tiger numbers and the expansion of human settlements close to protected areas are increasingly bringing tigers closer to people and livestock. This has resulted in tigers attacking people and preying on domestic cattle, leading to loss of life and income. This conflict has come to a head in the Central Indian and Eastern Ghats landscape, which harbours about 40% (1439 of 3682) of the country’s tiger population. The incident took place in the Dusotimukh gram panchayat of Golaghat district, about 20 km from the Agoratoli or Eastern range of the state’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP), which became a tiger reserve in 2015. &#8220;We received information about the incident at around 8 a.m. after which we reached the spot,&#8221; Gunadeep Das, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Golaghat division, told Mongabay India. &#8220;We found a few thousand people gathered there, armed with machetes, sticks, spears, and other weapons. The tiger had already died, and its body parts like nails, claws, and tail were cut off,” adding that they are investigating if the body parts were cut off for trade. “We sent the body for post-mortem and later buried it.&#8221; Das added that two people from the Dusotimukh area were arrested based on evidence and produced in court. The residents, meanwhile, have blamed inaction of the forest department, as they claim the tiger had been active in the Dusotimukh area since the last few months and was a threat to the people.
