But a waste incineration plant commissioned near his village, by the corporation, has made his life arduous. “We have the entire waste processing mall of Delhi here — a khatta (dumping ground), a hazardous waste disposal site, a composting plant, and a 28 megawatt (MW) waste-to-energy (WTE) plant. And as if all this were not enough, now they have imposed another one (WTE plant) on us,” said Saini, a resident of Sannoth, a village near Bawana at the northwestern edge of Delhi. “The world recognises the value of yoga and breathing in fresh air. But forget about the outdoors; we even have to seal the holes in our doors to avoid the stench. My uncle, who regularly did pranayam (breathing exercises), has been paralysed and bedridden for six years now,” Saini said, whose car is full of posters advocating for the &#8220;right to breathe&#8221;. The construction of the new 3,000 tonnes-per-day (TPD), 30-megawatt WTE plant began in May despite a case before the National Green Tribunal and residents’ protests since December 2024. It is collected by municipalities, handled by sanitation workers, discussed in ward meetings, and noticed most visibly when drains clog, bins overflow, or dumpsites catch fire. Yet this everyday urban challenge is also a climate challenge. For India, the waste sector offers one of the most practical city level pathways for climate compatible development. Globally, solid waste management contributes around 5% of greenhouse gas emissions. In India, the waste sector accounted for 75.64 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2020, or 2.56% of the country’s total emissions. This may appear modest when compared with energy, industry, or transport, but the direction of travel matters. India’s waste sector emissions have increased more than three times between 1994 and 2020. As cities grow, consumption rises, municipal solid waste volumes expand, this share will become harder to ignore. The climate relevance of waste lies in how everyday sanitation and waste-management systems influence greenhouse gas emissions. Methane is central to this connection. It has a much stronger warming effect than carbon dioxide in the near term and has about 28 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. Because methane is also shorter-lived in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, reducing methane emissions can deliver relatively fast climate benefits. In India’s waste sector, methane is the dominant greenhouse gas, accounting for more than 75% of the waste sector’s emissions in 2020. 							<![CDATA[Reports of Kerala’s biomedical waste being dumped along the Tamil Nadu border, along with incidents of meat waste and plastic waste being buried in pits across Tamil Nadu’s rural landscapes, have, over the years, become a disturbing routine in news reports. What once appeared as isolated violations has evolved into a pattern. In the last decade, environmentalists estimate that hundreds of mixed waste dumping incidents along the state borders have been recorded, with many more likely unreported. Some of this waste being dumped includes biomedical waste. In certain instances, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken suo motu cognisance, initiating proceedings against the Kerala government. In one such case, biomedical waste from a cancer centre in Kerala that had been dumped in Tamil Nadu was ordered to be collected and transported back to Kerala. Yet a critical question remains: why does Kerala’s biomedical waste continue to cross into Tamil Nadu? Kerala’s biomedical waste is being dumped along the Tamil Nadu border. With no formal training to speak of, he was left with an option that employs millions of the country’s population: waste collection. Yadav works for a kabadiwala — an informal scrap dealer — collecting all kinds of trash which is segregated and ultimately sold to bigger dealers. Even though he earns just ₹100-500 a day, Yadav is part of a lucrative industry valued at approximately ₹1.3 trillion. Since the early 2000s, electronic waste has entered the very same stream in hordes — landing in the laps of informal waste collectors who dismantle devices at grave personal risk. Around 845 km away from where Yadav is, in Padarayanpura in Bengaluru, Karnataka, another waste collector Sharvan, held up copper shards he had manually stripped from discarded wires. “This is like gold to us. The copper sells for ₹1,000-1,200 per kilogram,” he said. Despite playing an outsized role in India’s waste management, workers like Yadav and Sharvan lie outside the country’s formal recycling governance framework. A big reason why e-waste collection and processing stays with the informal sector is because formal facilities lack the capacity to process the sheer volume of e-waste generated in the country. As they walked, they collected samples by carefully chiselling out pieces of rocky outcrops where plastic waste had been trapped, later transporting these to the lab for analysis. One of these samples had a green plastic net embedded within the rock, which  the team recently reported as the first evidence of &#8216;plastistone&#8217; — a plastic-rock formation — from India’s western coast. Plastic-rock structures have been documented globally, including from the shores of Andaman and Nicobar islands and Tamil Nadu. Earlier formations found in India were largely plastiglomerates and pyroplastics that are formed by human-induced burning of plastic. In contrast, researchers suggest that plastistone has formed through natural processes, where the bonding of plastic debris with sediments and biological components was brought about by UV exposure, high temperatures and waves. The study, published in Discover Oceans, also found that the plastic filament protruding from the rock was polyamide in nature, suggesting that it originated from a discarded nylon fishing net. Plastistone is likely a “novel form of sedimentary rock”, said Punyasloke Bhadury, professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata and the study’s corresponding author, who added that that this is the first plastistone formation to be reported from the Indian subcontinent. The set-up promotes the use of home-generated biogas from wet-waste, over the typical LPG supply that homes use for cooking. The recent West Asia conflict led to an energy crisis in India when the Strait of Hormuz — where most of India’s imported LPG comes through — was closed. Hospitality industry, food processing companies and households in the country rushed to switch to alternatives, many switching back to traditional wood and cow-dung cake-fuelled open stoves, and induction stoves. Soon after, long queues of people waiting in line for an LPG cylinder became a common sight in almost all cities of India with many paying as high as ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 for a ₹950 LPG cylinder, many being sold in the black market. Sahasrabuddhe has been LPG-free for the past seven years and his company has helped restaurants, cafeterias, canteens and families in Pune and nearby cities reduce their dependence on LPG. He has installed the biogas system for around 440 customers since 2015. The 405 currently active systems of the total installed manage 1,119 tonnes of waste annually, and the biogas produced in the process has saved around 3,000 LPG cylinders of 14 kg, worth ₹2.8 million in a decade. Sahasrabuddhe himself has saved around ₹70,000 in the last seven years doing all his cooking on biogas. 							<![CDATA[The Rushikulya rookery in Odisha’s Ganjam district is among the most important turtle rookeries in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) converge here to lay eggs in a synchronous mass nesting event or arribada, with almost 700,000 olive ridleys coming ashore to lay eggs in February 2025 alone. However, plastic pollution and its associated problems plague this important 10-km stretch along India’s eastern coastline. A recent study by the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, reports significant presence of plastic waste and discarded fishing nets across four nesting beaches at Rushikulya, reflecting a global crisis of ever-increasing marine plastic pollution. Nesting among plastics Surveys across four nesting beaches — New Podampetta, Purunabandha, Siddhantnagar, and Prayagi — during the peak 2025 nesting season recorded more than 1,100 litter items, over 85% of which were plastic. The presence of plastic bottles, wrappers, and bags indicated both land-based runoff and direct human activity as key sources. Fisheries-related debris, including discarded nets, thermocol, and nylon rope fragments — collectively termed as ‘ghost gear’ or abandoned, lost, and otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) — made up 41% of all recorded litter across all sites. Fishing nets alone made up around 32% of the recorded litter at New Podampetta, while thermocol too contributed a little over 31% at Siddhantnagar. This is not an isolated incident. Researchers recorded 4,783 instances from January to July 2024 where hermit crabs were entrapped in marine litter across 28 beaches in the Nicobar Islands, according to a new study published in January 2026. The study was conducted by Mayur Fulmali and Nehru Prabakaran from the Wildlife Institute of India. The researchers surveyed beaches across two island subgroups – Nancowry and Great Nicobar. &#8220;These small crabs are very important for the coastal ecosystem and in most marine litter studies, they are neglected,” said Fulmali. The new rules signal a shift towards a more systematic compliance architecture, with a clearer outline of duties for waste generators, a revised definition of Bulk Waste Generators, and higher landfill user fees for mixed waste to encourage segregation. Well-intentioned as the new rules are, experts caution against gaps in implementation that have dogged solid waste management in India for decades. Illustrating this are the towering landfills in New Delhi — Bhalaswa, Ghazipur and Okhla — symbols of the city’s historical failure to segregate waste at source. Delhi leads all Indian cities, generating approximately 600 grams of waste per person per day. Nearly 64% of the collected waste is processed, according to the Central Pollution Control Bureau (CPCB), while the remaining 36% or. 4,241 tonnes, find its way to unsanitary landfills, or dumpsites everyday. These landfills and dumpsites are silent contributors to air pollution through the year as well as to greenhouse gas emissions and heat stress during the summers. Biomass and waste burning are the second largest contributors to particulate matter emissions in Delhi, contributing 23% to PM10 and 24% to PM2.5, according to one source apportionment study. When biodegradable waste accumulates and is left to rot, it produces methane, which has a warming potential 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide, over a 20-year-period, and is the second-largest contributor to global warming. Today, Bishwokarma and his fellow residents of the border town cover their noses with a handkerchief whenever they pass by the river that was once their village’s lifeline. The flowing liquid no longer resembles a river. It is thick and black as if a truckload of oil had been dumped into it. The air around the river feels heavy with the stench of sulphur and rotting organic matter. “This is no longer a river,” Bishwokarma said, pointing toward it. “It has become an open drain for factories, and we haven’t just lost a river, we’ve lost our self-respect,” he added. The river, which was once a crucial part of daily life, religion and agriculture in Bara and Parsa districts, is one of the 6,000-odd rivers and rivulets flowing into India from Nepal. It begins its journey from the Ramban Jhadi (forest) of Bara district farther north and passes through Nepal’s largest industrial zone, the Bara-Parsa corridor. The Bill was passed in the monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature but has been strongly criticised by citizen collectives and environmentalists in the state&#8217;s capital, Bengaluru. This Bill aims to amend the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority Act (KTCDA), 2014, for area-wise buffer zones around lakes, based on the size of the lake. This would then allow for the construction of “certain public utility activities such as roads, bridges, electrical lines, and water supply lines.” Buffer zones are designated areas around lakes and stormwater drains where construction and other development activities are not permitted. “They create land and water boundaries where flora and fauna can flourish, which would not exist otherwise,” says Shubha Ramachandran, a water sustainability consultant. She elaborates that buffer zones increase the places around the lake where percolation is possible. “When there is solid waste dumping, it [buffer zone] provides space for it [waste] to be further filtered before it comes into the lake or is diverted. The wider the buffer zone, the better,” she says. Moreover, in urban areas, buffer zones also provide some spaces for recreation. The Global Methane Status Report 2025, produced by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), reviews progress under the Global Methane Pledge, which commits participating countries to work toward a collective reduction of at least 30% in global methane emissions from 2020 levels by 2030. The Global Methane Pledge was launched at COP26 in 2021 by the European Union and the United States. This year, 2025, marks its halfway point. As of April 2025, 159 countries and the European Commission had joined the pledge, together accounting for 57% of global emissions. The report finds that global anthropogenic methane emissions have risen by a few percent since 2020. Agriculture accounts for the majority, 42%, of these emissions, energy for 38%, and waste for 20%. Although current legislation and policy shifts mean projected 2030 emissions are somewhat lower than earlier forecasts, they are still expected to be higher than in 2020 unless countries fully deploy available control measures. The report says that three of the top five are yet to commit to the GMP. India is one of them and is identified as the world’s third-largest methane emitter in absolute terms. The Ladakh Marathon, one of the most popular high-altitude marathons in the world, has six races ranging from five kilometres to 122 km where athletes run at an altitude of 3,170 to 5,374 metres (10,400 to 17,631 feet). It takes place every year from early to mid-September. Running in Ladakh is no easy feat. “You’re running on 50% less oxygen and so the challenges are unimaginable,” explained Chewang Motup, co-founder of Rimo Expeditions, which organises the marathon. But organising a marathon there successfully for 12 years is a laborious task too. Ladakh is a high-altitude, cold desert that has been susceptible to the effects of climate change over recent years. A 2024 study published in the Journal of Water and Climate Change revealed that rising temperatures, high variability of precipitation, and changes in rainfall patterns have reduced the groundwater reserves in the region. The organisers share that sustainability is one of the core ethos of the event. “We give equal importance to running and the environment, and that&#8217;s the only way forward for a place like Ladakh. Yet what we collectively call waste is, in reality, a microcosm of its own. It consists of multiple materials: plastics, paper, metal, glass, and more, each with a distinct destination. The responsibility of ensuring that these discarded items reach their appropriate endpoints rests largely on the shoulders of the informal workforce of waste workers. For instance, a discarded plastic bottle or aluminium can is often identified by a waste picker from a roadside or a heap of garbage and sold to a scrap shop at predetermined rates per kilogram based on the type of material. These scrap shops act as intermediaries, collecting different kinds of waste either directly from waste pickers or from scrap buyers who purchase recyclables door to door or from local shops. The collected material is then sold to large aggregators, where it is dismantled, shredded, baled, and sent to its final destination, such as recycling units or industries, depending on its type and utility value. In India, waste work has historically not been recognised as “decent work”. The burden of manually picking, segregating, and transporting waste falls largely on waste workers, much of it carried out informally, without government support or institutional recognition. As a result, they often endure poor working conditions, exposure to harmful waste, low pay, and exploitation by large aggregators, with their rights rarely acknowledged. 							<![CDATA[A new study provides evidence of microplastics in the Bhoj wetland, a Ramsar site and Bhopal’s primary source of drinking water. The Bhoj wetland spans nearly 32 square kilometres in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, comprising the upper lake (Bada Talab) and the lower lake (Chhota Talab). It is recognised as a Ramsar site of international importance and provides drinking water to about 40% of Bhopal’s 2.5 million residents, apart from supporting fisheries, agriculture, tourism and biodiversity. As part of the research, Surya Singh and her colleagues at the Indian Council of Medical Research–National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR–NIREH), Bhopal, collected samples of the surface water. They analysed them to identify plastic particles larger than about 300 micrometres, using the Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR) method. They detected concentrations of 2.4 items per litre in the upper lake and 6.6 items per litre in the lower lake. To put this in perspective, the findings suggest that Bhoj wetland’s microplastic levels are comparable to or higher than the most polluted stretches of the Ganga river, where concentrations have ranged from about 100 to over 1,000 particles per cubic metre or per 1,000 litres in some areas. By contrast, European freshwater lakes such as Balaton lake typically show much lower concentrations, often below 10 particles per cubic metre or 1,000 litres, highlighting that the Bhoj wetland’s contamination is far greater than most European systems and comparable to India’s worst-affected waters. The Achan landfill, once part of a wetland system, adjacent to Anchar lake has, since 1986, become Kashmir’s largest dumping ground — a 123-acre landfill that now holds more than a million tonnes of untreated waste, buzzing with flies, slick with leachate, and crowned with circling crows. Locals recall a different time. Until the early 1990s, the area was farmland and wetlands with paddy cultivated here for centuries. Now, residents of Soura, Nowshahra, Hawal, and Eidgah say the stench is unbearable, especially in the summer heat or after rain when the odour intensifies. Bashir Ahmad, who moved to Achan in search of a better life, says the decision has cost him his health. Diagnosed with asthma, he struggles to breathe in the polluted air. “My lungs are damaged,” he says. “My children are never well. 							<![CDATA[Plastic debris and derelict fishing gear are “entangling” and “smothering” corals reefs in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are home to some of India’s most pristine coral reefs and with endemic fauna and flora, a new marine survey shows. The survey aimed to provide critical data on the impacts of marine litter and derelict fishing gear on the critically endangered coral reefs in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, recognised as highly biodiverse yet underrepresented in global marine pollution studies. The findings add to recent studies highlighting an increasing amount of plastic litter and derelict fishing gear in global oceans, which pose significant threats to corals and reef-associated marine biota. The survey, published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, was conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi Government College in Andaman and Nicobar Islands; regional centres under the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Port Blair and Thiruvanathapuram; the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research’s National Institute of Oceanography, Goa; and Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad. Plastic was the most dominant litter, forming about 60% of the litter in the reefs, the survey found. Derelict fishing gear made mostly of plastic comprised about one-third of the total litter. Indicators such as the plastic abundance index (PAI), hazardous item index (HII), and clean environment index (CEI) to assess the ecological impact of marine litter highlighted “significant risks” posed by marine litter to the reefs.
